The Ryder Cup, golf’s premier match-play tournament, takes place at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill., Sept. 28-30 as Davis Love III captains the U.S. team against José María Olazábal’s Team Europe. Top players for the U.S. include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Zach Johnson, Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Webb Simpson, Keegan Bradley and Matt Kuchar, while Team Europe includes Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood. The beauty of the FedExCup Playoffs is it brings the best golfers in the world together in a format similar to college basketball’s NCAA Tournament. The main difference, of course, is that there is a $10 million prize for the last golfer standing and another $25 million to split amongst the other competitors. Apparently, Olympics legend Michael Phelps doesn’t have as smooth a stroke on the golf course as he does in the swimming pool. Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Matt Kuchar, Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are among the contenders to take home the Wanamaker trophy and end the season on a high note. If some of the European golfers participating in this week’s PGA Championship appear to feel at home on the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina, it’s probably because it plays much more like something you’d find on the other side of the pond. With the way the course is designed, 10 holes run alongside the Atlantic Ocean and are subjected to inconsistent winds. Rory McIlroy gave golf fans flashbacks to the days of Tiger Woods’ dominance with his remarkable victory at last year’s U.S. Open.
