Roots: The Classic Novel and Miniseries Gets a Powerful New Adaptation

Roots, based on Alex Haley’s novel, was first produced for television in 1977, when the epic, eight-part miniseries went on to gain huge audiences (its finale still ranks as the No. 3 highest-rated episode of television) and launch a star in LeVar Burton, who played the iconic character of Kunta Kinte. In History’s exceptional four-part retelling of Roots, it is into Burton’s memorable shoes that actor Malachi Kirby now steps as Kunta, the initial, and overarching, protagonist in a story that leads from 1750 Africa, to the slave trade and plantation life, and beyond the Civil War. Although this new […]

History’s Alone will be back in April

After 2.4 million viewers tuned in for the Season 1 finale of History’s survival series Alone (a growth of 50 percent over the series premiere), it was probably a no-brainer that the network’s No. 1 new non-fiction series of 2015 would be back for a second season. And so it is, with Alone Season 2 debuting April 21 at 9pm ET/PT. History says that the 13-episode season puts 10 hardcore survivalists alone on northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The contestants have one mission — to stay alive. No camera crews, no teams and no gimmicks are on hand, per the network. But a $500,000 […]

Craig Ferguson says History’s “Join or Die” features “unhinged, dangerous, rollicking” conversation

It’s always nice to see when a network gets back to its original mission — and its name — and History has been doing a fine job of that of late. For history buffs, miniseries like Texas Rising have helped complement other series like Pawn Stars, and the new series Join or Die With Craig Ferguson should also be a welcome addition for those who like to discuss, and debate, history. The series is the brainchild of former late-night host Craig Ferguson, and will feature a roundtable of people talking about six historical events or figures, whittling them down to […]

Epic adaptation of “War and Peace” simulcast across A&E, History and Lifetime

Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel War and Peace always seemed like one of those books that people like to claim to have read but may not have actually done so, mainly given its formidable size, clocking in at well over 1,000 pages. If you fall into this category, you’re in luck, as a BBC adaptation of the novel — airing in the United States across the A&E, History and Lifetime networks — condenses the story into its main elements and delivers a strong costume drama the likes of which used to be featured regularly on A&E and History. (Whether or not […]

Interview: Rick and Marty Lagina talk Oak Island

Every since they were kids Rick and Marty Lagina have shared an insatiable desire (Rick a little more than Marty) to solve the mystery surrounding Oak Island, a 140-acre island off the coast of Nova Scotia believed to be the resting place of ancient treasures dating back to the Knights Templar (some even believe the Ark of the Covenant is located there). The legends about deadly curses and glorious treasures have fascinated explorers for over 200 years. It’s been a maddening process but they are determined to see it through. We recently talked to the lovable Lagina brothers (Marty is […]

Alone, History’s bold survival experiment, premieres tonight!

If you were alone — REALLY alone — in the wilderness, what do you think would do you in first? The wild, predatory animals? The harsh terrain? Or the unfathomable loneliness that can only come from being totally cut-off from all of humanity? (I want to say the loneliness would get me, but I’m pretty sure I’d be mauled by a black bear before I had the chance to pine for human contact. But then again, I’m no survivalist. Thank goodness the contenders on Alone are, or this series would be done after day one.) Tonight at 10pm ET/PT (9pm […]
