2012 NHL Winter Classic Jan. 2 on NBC

The NHL will play its fifth outdoor NHL Winter Classic game (usually slated for New Year’s Day) on Monday, Jan. 2, at 1pm ET, at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park. The Philadelphia Flyers host the New York Rangers in a clash of Eastern Conference Atlantic Division rivals. This is the first Winter Classic appearance for the Rangers, and the second for the Flyers, who lost to the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park in 2010. On Jan. 2, the cable sports network known as Versus will be rebranded as NBC Sports Network, just in time to coincide with NBC’s coverage of the 2012 NHL Winter Classic outdoor hockey game between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The puck drops on the 2011 NHL season on Thursday, Oct. 6, beginning at 7pm ET with a doubleheader on Versus. First up, the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins welcome the Eastern Conference rival Philadelphia Flyers. The Bruins kept their core together, while the Flyers revamped their team in the offseason to beef up their defense and goaltending. One of two long-suffering NHL fanbases will finally get some relief as the Stanley Cup Finals pit the Eastern Conference champion Boston Bruins — who’ve not won a Cup since 1972 — against the West champion Vancouver Canucks, who’ve never won a Cup in their 40-year existence. The 2011 NHL All-Star Game at RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C., eschews the traditional East vs. West matchup in favor of a format with a decidedly fantasy-hockey feel to it. Captains for each side will select their teams from a pool of 42 players chosen by fan balloting and the NHL in the 2011 All-Star Fantasy Draft on Jan. 28 (televised by Versus).
