Where to watch the 2012 Democratic National Convention

With the Republican National Convention winding down, it’s the Democrats’ turn to gather, with the Democratic National Convention taking place in Charlotte Sept. 4-6. There they are expected to formally nominate President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for a second term as President and Vice President of the United States. While there may be less drama than what transpired at the RNC (which had the threat of a hurricane, outbursts from Ron Paul supporters, etc.) you just never can tell what may happen. Several news outlets will be on hand to cover what does take place, and here’s […]

PBS celebrates Julia Child’s centenary

I have my share of memories of Julia Child — from watching her truss a bird or flambée a dish in the pan when I was a kid, to that famous picture of her wielding a cleaver overhead, to eventually learning how to cook some of her recipes. For many of us, she’s been around all our lives, either cooking or even as the subject of good-natured parody. (Remember that hilariously bloody Saturday Night Live sketch with Dan Aykroyd playing her?) But make no mistake: Julia’s influence on the world of home cooking can never be overestimated, and we are […]

New PBS Bob Ross mashup continues network’s digital salutes to past icons

Last weekend, at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour PBS panels, network president and CEO Paula Kerger explained the importance of digital in PBS’ future efforts. “We are looking for ways to connect to our audiences both on air and across Internet, video, and mobile platforms,” she said, “as we are investing in new content and finding new ways to connect with our audiences. … As we saw demonstrated most recently with the viral explosion of the Fred Rogers mix up [sic], ‘Garden of Your Mind,’ which we commissioned for YouTube, it is indeed possible to break new ground across […]

TCA: “Downton Abbey” Season 3 panel wows critics

PBS had the spotlight on Day 1 of the Summer 2012 Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Tour at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, and while the day offered plenty of fascinating glimpses of upcoming programming offerings — from the new British acquisition Call the Midwife to the return of Kenneth Branagh’s Wallander — the final panel of the day, as expected, proved to be, as the Brits might say, the real “cracker.” It was the session for the upcoming American premiere on PBS of Season 3 of the smash hit Downton Abbey, which premieres in the States on Jan. […]

The game is afoot again as Season 2 of “Sherlock” premieres on PBS

It didn’t take a master detective to deduce that the BBC series Sherlock — a modern retelling of the classic Sherlock Holmes stories — would be back for a second season (or “series,” as they like to say across the pond). Its original three episodes debuted to critical and fan raves on both sides of the Atlantic, demonstrating once again that Sherlock is one of those fictional characters whom fans will not tire of. It has been estimated that Holmes is the most frequently depicted character in the history of cinema, with his first known appearance coming in a brief, […]

“American Masters” spotlights Harper Lee and Margaret Mitchell tonight on PBS

In a win-win for book and film lovers alike, tonight PBS’ acclaimed biography series American Masters will present back-to-back profiles of Gone With the Wind scribe Margaret Mitchell and To Kill a Mockingbird author Harper Lee that present facts, photos and interviews fresh to even their most ardent fans. Though Mitchell was born in 1900 and Lee in 1926, like their works, these women are every ounce as compelling as any character from today’s entertainment realm, real or fictionalized. Did you know Mitchell rappelled down buildings as a newspaper reporter and funded the education of African-American medical students after GWTW […]
