Jenny McCarthy Show: “7 Questions” With … Jenny McCarthy

Jenny McCarthy says her mission with her new late-night talk show is to “bring sexy back” to the genre. This seems like an eminently attainable goal for the former Playboy centerfold, who describes The Jenny McCarthy Show as “Playboy After Dark meets Watch What Happens Live.” The weekly gabfest, which will feature celebs and comedy segments, will haunt VH1 Fridays beginning Feb. 8. The show will shoot in Los Angeles, but if it’s a big hit and the network wants to make it a daily program, McCarthy says she will insist production move to her hometown of Chicago, where she […]

New VH1 series shines spotlight on moms who refuse to grow up

The latest in bad-parenting television brings us Mama Drama, a new VH1 docuseries from the folks responsible for Jersey Shore. The series showcases the relationship between party moms and their BFF daughters. June Cleavers they are not: These mothers embody a so-called 15/50 mentality — they have the bodies of grown women, but want to act like teenagers. They cling to youth through their young adult daughters — dressing like them, going out to the clubs with them and making drunken nightlife decisions alongside them. So, really, what could be trashier better than putting a bunch of these outrageous ladies […]

VH1 “Uprising” documentary looks back at L.A. Riots

It’s been 20 years since the L.A. Riots — nearly a week (April 29-May 4, 1992) of unrest, looting and rage that erupted in the wake of the acquittal of four LAPD officers (three white, one Hispanic) who were caught on videotape beating black motorist Rodney King. The riots paralyzed Los Angeles and sent racial shockwaves across the country. To recognize the anniversary of the event — which left 54 people dead and over 12,000 arrested — VH1 will premiere the documentary film Uprising: Hip Hop and the L.A. Riots at 9pm on May 1. The film is executive-produced and […]

Stevie TV brings YouTube sensation Stevie Ryan to VH1

Stevie Ryan is pencil-thin and pinup-girl pretty, with almond-shaped hazel eyes, a lush pout and cascades of dark, shiny hair. But she’d rather look like you. Especially if you’re a readily parodied part of the pop-culture lexicon. Growing up outside of Los Angeles with a taste for silent films and a longing to entertain, Ryan moved into the city to find her fortune and discovered that she got the most attention from works of her own creation. To fill the time between commercial and print gigs, Ryan began producing comically oddball — frequently NSFW — online videos in her apartment, […]

VH1 breaks up the holidays with “40 Funniest Fails 2”

One reason reality television is so popular is because watching other people figuratively fall on their faces allows us to somehow feel better about ourselves, so imagine the enjoyment of watching someone literally falling on their face. Actually, you don’t have to imagine it, thanks to VH1. Tonight at 9pm ET, the network is rolling out the premiere of 40 Funniest Fails 2, a sequel to an hourlong clip-fest of people taking a spill for our viewing pleasure. Don’t get me wrong, I am never a fan of watching others get physically hurt, but I have to admit that there […]

Kelly Clarkson goes unplugged in VH1 special

By Tom Comi Follow @ChannelGuide Some could argue that the first season of American Idol wasn’t as competitive as the the following years due to its then-obscurity, but nobody can claim that there has been a winner to date with a more powerful voice than inaugural champ Kelly Clarkson. Fans and skeptics alike can find out tonight (11pm ET) when the Texas native takes the stage in a VH1 Unplugged special. For those unfamiliar with the term, unplugged means a scaled-down, acoustic performance with no electric guitars, keyboards or over-amplification. It presents musicians and singers as they are, instead of […]

Mum’s the word: VH1’s “Unplugged: Mumford & Sons” airs Friday

Mumford & Sons is of those bands, the ones that hipster Hollywood types like Carey Mulligan, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman — and a few music obsessed mortals like my friend Kiki — seem to know about a good year before the rest of us do. But once you finally get on the bandwagon, you’re awful glad to find yourself there. Especially if you think that squeezebox, banjo and stand-up bass never really lost their place in good music. Most folks got their first look at the English power bluegrass (Britgrass? Graygrass?) quartet —  made up of Marcus Mumford, “Country” Winston […]
