"Sports Soup" On Versus: Our Compliments To The Chef

Posted by Cubicle QB

I checked out the Oct. 13 premiere of the new sports comedy show Sports Soup (airing Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10pm ET on Versus).

I thought we were in for the worst when Matt Iseman opened the series with the joke, “I’m Matt Iseman, and like the Dallas Cowboys, I can’t prevent a blocked punt, either.” Ugh.

Fortunately, after that Iseman got right into the clips, and the show got progressively funnier. True, a lot of it — like T.O.’s weird Urkelesque outfit, Def Leppard’s lead singer setting the Stanley Cup upside down, and Chinese table tennis player Wang Hao drunkenly beating a security guard — I’d already read about or seen on Deadspin. But it’s still funny getting Sports Soup‘s take on them.

I’m pretty impressed with the range of clips they got — everything from the big broadcast networks’ NFL studio shows to local affiliates’ local sports shows, a football game on CBS College Sports and even a student-produced show from USC. There’s even a clip of the recent E:60 segment about people using sperm from athletes in the hopes of having athletic kids. (“I’m not sure what’s more disturbing: The kid holding the wrong end of the bat, or the fact that when you’re in a sperm bank, you have to wear goggles!”) But a few of the clips — like the one of the Arkansas baseball player faking getting hit by a pitch — were pretty old.

Best Moment: A montage of extraordinarily polite CBS NFL studio host James Brown saying, “Thank you so very much” about 20 times during the broadcast. (It’s true. Along with Jim Nantz, Brown is one of the nicest guys I’ve interviewed. Must be something in the water at CBS.)
