“One Tree Hill”: The Slippery Slope STALLS For Once

Posted by: haro1d

Well, did you get to see One Tree Hill last night? Because I didn’t. I would love to recap and tell you all about it, but as fate would have it the only thing happening in our house last night was dinner by candlelight. Think I was being romantic, like Lucas or Nathan, or any of the OTH gang, because it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend? Sorry to disappoint you, but the power was out in our neighborhood, preventing ANY watching, recording, etc., of OTH. And in reality, there WAS no episode, so don’t sweat it. Nice to have a bit of a break from the recap business.

But it DOES give me the opportunity to take time to speculate on where the season and show are going, which I’ve been meaning to do. (And as always, feel free to join in the discussion and let me know what YOU think is on the horizon.)

Let’s take a look, shall we? (And bear in mind that I HAVE NOT been able to see last night’s episode.)

Lucas and Peyton: So much to look forward to … Lucas has a career as a writer of books as well as for the screen. Peyton has somehow, miraculously, in the face of the long-collapsing music industry, managed to launch her label and keep it running with loyal fans who would NEVER illegally download or share Mia’s songs or anyone else’s on her label. And they have the little one on the way. There’s always been a brooding, dark undercurrent to these two characters though, and it seems likely that they’re headed for something more like an abyss than total bliss. I don’t know if the show is going to continue for much longer, but if it ends sooner than later, I wouldn’t be surprised if Peyton dies during childbirth, but their baby survives, and Lucas is forced to face life as a single parent. Roll credits.

Nathan, Haley and Jamie: The sun never really sets on these two, and if Lucas is going to have to be a single parent, they can’t all be killed in a limo crash or something. If their current trajectory follows through, by series end, Haley should be gearing up for her next comeback tour, which is just going to HAPPEN to perfectly coincide with the Chiefs’ road schedule, so the whole family will be able to stay together on the road. Jamie will make first string on his school’s intramural team, and Nathan will take time from his busy schedule to coach all of them.

Dan Scott: The beeper will go off and he WILL receive his heart transplant — successfully. After a period of recovery and physical therapy, he’ll go out into the world a fully changed man (with a new heart — get the metaphor?), will make his peace with everyone in Tree Hill, will save Jamie’s life two or three more times, but on the last save, he’ll end up being killed.

Mouth and Millie: It’s a little hazy, I have to say. They may get together for a while yet, but by the time they do, Millie may be a full-on floozy. (OK, probably not, but she may have discovered that she’s pregnant with Owen’s baby.) And Mouth … well, see below.

Brooke Davis: Brooke will somehow circumnavigate all of the red tape involved in adoption to formally adopt Sam. Unfortunately, the paperwork takes so long that by the time everything’s settled, Sam will be on the cusp of her 18th birthday and it won’t matter anymore. But there will be a shining moment when Victoria, Brooke’s mom, shows up and Sam gives her what for about Brooke being a better mom. Brooke will not end up with Julian, but in a turn of events that will only be a partial surprise, Brooke and Mouth will end up together, finally bringing full circle the prophecy as laid down in the video time capsule so many years ago.

Skills: Lately, I get the feeling they don’t know what to do with Skills’ character, and I somehow suspect it’s going to extend to the end of the series. He’ll be there, he’ll have Nathan’s and Lucas’ backs, and be surrogate uncle to Jamie … but maybe everyone will just find him shagging away with Deb in a poolhouse or closet somewhere.

Mia and Chase: Chase eventually will have to reveal his Clean-Teen status to her, and she’s not gonna believe it, but she’ll be so googly eyed that she’ll stand by her man. And at some point, she’ll corrupt him, because that’s what rock ‘n’ roll is all about, isn’t it?

Karen and Andy: Yachting their way back to Tree Hill to be with Lucas and Peyton at the time of their baby’s birth, a storm strikes. Their vessel is lost to radar in the Bermuda Triangle and is never heard from again. (That way, the show doesn’t have to pony up the cash for the extra special-guest appearances. Hey — times is tough!)

Coach Whitey: Forgot about him, didn’t you? He’ll be in an assisted-living home at this time, and will reappear in the final episode to dispense some sage advice to Lucas on what it’s like to lose one’s beloved spouse, and how to survive it. And all of it will be fodder for Lucas’ next book, which will be on sale at a store near you.
