Theresa Caputo, the star of TLC’s series Long Island Medium, says she was 28 when she was first introduced to the possibility that she was a medium. It took another five years for her to actually accept her gift.
“There’s a big difference from when I accepted it to who am I?” Caputo told us. She said she struggled with feeling, “I’m no different than anybody else. Why was I chosen to do this? Why is this my journey?”
The aftermath of 9/11 left her with clarity and a feeling of purpose for what she calls her role in the physical world. Now Caputo spends her days and nights taking her clients on an emotional and spiritual journey with the afterlife. She helps people find closure and/or reconnect some with loved ones who have passed.

Her wait time is over two years at this point, due to the popularity of the show.
Surprisingly, Caputo has built her career on word of mouth only and has done little to no marketing. When asked if she’s ready for what a TV series will bring as far as popularity, Caputo says: “Absolutely not. I still think this is like a school project. It’s so not reality yet for me. My life is overwhelming as it is, as of right now, my waiting list to get an appointment is… I don’t have any availability until January 2013.”

Hi, I watch your show religiously, and love how you are able to connect with people that have passed. This is my story. You were recently in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and my daughter-in-law and some friends went to see you. If I had known, I for sure would have been there. Anyway, you had asked the audience if anyone had lost a family member around 5 years of age and her name was Heather. She had drowned. My daughter-in-law was to afraid to stand up, but Heather was my daughter. When Joylyn (daughter-in-law) started to tell me what had happened, my hair stood on my arms and I got goosebumps. Not only was she my mother she was my best friend. We spent every day together sense my father and brother died. Theresa please help me. I cant go on like this. Teresa just in the past few years i have lost so many people in my family.First grandparents,3 uncles 1 aunt stepfather,then my father.The person that hurts the most is the aunt,she was like a second mother. I think of her every day and night, even though it has been 4 years I dream about her I have even had an emotional breakdown.My aunt was in her 60’s she told my mom she was dying mom called 911 and told her her blood pressure was fine ekg was fine,not long after they left she sat in the chair with mon and died. I feel really bad because Im a nurse and could have done cpr. I live less than a mile away but mom didnt call me cause ems said she was fine.mom didnt know cpr so she feels really bad as well,we all need help especially my mom.She has demensia so this stays on her mind as well. therapist tell us to deal with it please help. Hi Theresa my name is Rebecca, i have seen almo st eery episode if your show and i just have to say your awesome. I list my dad June 4th, 2010. He was sick for 9 years, i can’t even count how many surgeries he went through in that time. He was not only my father but my best friend, i was only 16 when he passed and now I’m trying to teeming my 5 year old how great his Papa was and reassure him that papa loved him and always will. A friend of ours , her name was Erica Rodriguez was brutely murdered by her husband last Dec 2012. She left three children. Andrew who is 16. Sylvia 18 yrs old and Gloria who is 7. I would really love for u to come visit my boyfriend of 9 years. He recently lost his best friend of 33 years…. Matt had cancer which he had surgery for approx 8 hours. He was fine. But he was ordered to wear a life vest for his heart to keep it pumping until his insurance would approve a pacemaker…he was living with his parents and one evening he told them it was too uncomfortable and he didn’t want to wear it… His mom is a cardiac nurse and checked on him 1 hour later and he was gone….
