NEW! Is Alaskan Bush People Fake? Does It Matter?

Alaskan Bush People
There were a lot of things about Discovery Channel’s unscripted series Alaskan Bush People that didn’t pass the smell test. Now there’s more foul air surrounding the Brown family, and it’s very likely we’ve seen the last of them on TV.

Commenter Talkeetnachris tipped us to this:

Billy brown was just charged with stealing over $13000 filing fraudulent PFD claims in Alaska. His near life will be in prison. A few other family members were also charged. This guy and his family are frauds. I have lived off the road system for years and these people won’t last a year. You have to be self sufficient. Hell, I even had to stitch a band cut on my leg once. Many of these shows only have entertainment value with no real practical lessons on what really living on your own is about.

Many commenters doubted that the Browns were actually living off the land, as the show depicted. Instead, it appears the Browns may have been living off of fraudulent Alaskan Permanent Fund Dividend applications. According to Anchorage’s KTUU, patriarch “Billy Brown alone faces 24 felony counts and is accused of illegally obtaining $13,080 in dividend cash for himself and others. The charges do not describe why investigators believe the Brown family was not eligible for the dividends that some members received between 2010 and 2013.” Also indicted were five of Billy’s seven children: Amora Jean Snowbird, Joshua “Bam Bam,” Gabriel “Gabe,” Solomon “Bear” and Noah.

This will come as disappointing news to the many fans of the show who appreciated the Browns’ family values and the off-the-grid lifestyle that they claimed to represent. The credibility of Discovery Channel and Park Slope Productions has to be questioned, as they apparently weren’t diligent about checking the Browns’ backgrounds (even before these indictments came to light) and then aired a special episode with the family defending their authenticity. And personally, recapping Alaskan Bush People has been great fun, and I’m going to miss writing about it and reading all of your comments.

I’m so mad, I could punch a fish.

Update: Get this. Discovery Channel says they are “currently filming new episodes.” From the Alaska Dispatch News:

Stair said that between October 2009 and August 2012, the family did not meet the “physical presence requirement” to receive PFDs. This means the state believes the family spent more than 180 days a year living outside of Alaska and lied about it on their applications, Stair said.

Sean Martin, director of communications at Discovery Channel, wrote in an email Thursday that “we don’t divulge our actual shoot dates, so cannot let you know when filming concluded on season one, but can confirm that we are currently filming new episodes, but have not announced those air dates yet.”

I don’t even…

  1. My wife and I watch every show we can. Sometimes 3 to 4 times. Like some of the other Reply, Its a very clean (no foul language) and a family
show. Keep them on TV, sure hope they return for a new season….

  2. Cant fault them for wanting to take care of their family, just as about 90% of people on welfare lie and double dip just to get funds and food stamps… Alot of people do it but for their own reasons and if its to feed and care for your family well hell I would do it to!!!

  3. I look forward to each episode and what can happen next. Great show for both adult and young children. I’ll keep them in prayers that they will all be clear and continue to entertain us.

  4. Leave the Brown family alone. I love this show. Please, please keep it on. It’s funny, educational and they do not harm anyone.

  5. My family love looking at the Bush Family. Please keep it on. We are from Houston Texas. We are learning a lot about the wilderness.

  6. Billy is so talented at writing. Just wonderful. The Mama is so sweet and brave. The kids are remarkable human beings. May God Bless this family and please let it remain on TV. There is so much trash tv today, this show was a wonderful get away for me.

  7. I really enjoy this show and family, billy and ami have raised there kids very well, if more kids were raised like them, this would be a better world.

  8. I love the family. We don’t see people like the Browns’ anymore. The family is so respectful of each other. These parents did something right. It’s a pleasure to watch and I love the series. Please give me more episodes to enjoy.

  9. I’ve enjoyed alaskian bush people since the 1st episode and I truly hope it keeps on going forward with new episodes. It was weird how the new episodes have just simply stopped out of no where. I miss this show as I’ve gotten attached to this family and would love to see this show air new episodes for many seasons to come. I hope this show doesn’t get canceled. Hopefully i see new episodes soon.

  10. I truly love your show. It’s facinating, and enjoyable to watch, I would find myself living in Alaska someday …however, I am not very fun of the extreme cold weather. I rather dream of being there in Alaska and the wilderness.

  11. love your show and family. Clean language and family values. Don’t care if it’s real or not I think you have a great family.

  12. I love the show because I don’t have to cover up my ears because dirty talk so please keep this show going

    • gas credit, clothes, generator, mattresses, water pump. bathing supplies..duck tape camping cooking supplies.. just a thought. NOW HOW CAN THESE THINGS GET TO THEM

  13. Can someone explain to me those accents? Or are they speech impediments? They don’t talk like any Alaskans I have ever heard. At times Gabe’s and Bear’s accents sound like they are channeling Sean Connery. So, what is up with that?

  14. One of my favorite series’ ever. Keep them on TV if for no other reason, then because of their innocence, honesty and sincerity alone. I need to see them on TV a, lot!

    • I love the Alaskan bush people, and I recently got my parents watching the show. I would record them then watch it over and over again. Now I’m kicking myself for not saving the episodes. Ive looked in stores and online for the DVDs but had no luck. I sure hope they continue with the show. I lived in the city my whole life and I’m fascinated by the life they choose to live. It kinda makes me want to move to Alaska to give it a go!

      • Go to youtube to watch all their shows. They have a channel. All the shows are on there except season two episode 9 & 10. I haven’t seen any new shows after the 8th episode and I am wondering what in the heck happened? they haven’t put them on the cable either.

  15. i got to like those kids.. it was an interesting setting where lures from budding tv notoriety skulked and tempted them.. sure Noah imagined for a moment or 2 that he was a genius, and bear was tantalized to become more and more like Tarzan from all the prompting. But, some real sincerity and ingenuity shone through, and the bickering wasn’t so egoic as it might have escalated to that’s for sure. Gabes Sean Connery imitation was faultless. They were good at playing bush people. I suppose put them in a Shakespear play and they would have made that work somehow too..heh..
i found the whole family very caring, charismatic.. vivacious and optimistically sweet.

  16. My family and I love this show. they are so talented. They make inventions to live by that I would never ever thought of trying. Keep them on. This is the most relaxing hour I can enjoy after a day of Stress.
