Jane the Virgin Episode 6 Recap: Telenovela Love

On “Chapter 5” of Jane the Virgin, we start off by going back in time to Jane’s 21st birthday party. It’s a normal 21st birthday party where the birthday girl and her guests are getting hammered — although in this party, the birthday girl’s mother is getting drunk too.

There’s a knock at the door and it’s a young Michael in his cop uniform. He and Jane share what’s called a “significant encounter” in telenovelas, which is the first encounter between two people who are meant to be together. This seems like a very emotional scene but Jane is plastered so she quickly changes it into party mood again by introducing Michael as the male cop stripper. She doesn’t believe him when he tells her he’s a real cop, but Jane gets the message when she takes his gun and shoots a hole through the ceiling.

After she’s sobered up a bit, Jane has Michael watch a telenovela with her in which the man is expressing his love for the woman out on a boat with snow falling down. Of course the secnario doesn’t make a bit of sense and Michael wonders Jane-the-virgin-jane-michael'why this would entertain Jane. She tells him that she loves how romantic they are and in this specific novela, she can’t get over how beautiful it is to hear the man tell the girl that he’s known that he’s loved her since he first saw her. Unfortunately, Michael gets a call over his radio which means his time with Jane is over. He thanks her for making him stay and leans in for a goodbye kiss.

Now that we know the story of how Michael and Jane met, we can go back to present day where Jane is upset at Michael and thinking about calling off the wedding. He tells her that he still wants to get married, but Jane needs more time to think about everything. It’s hard to quickly forgive someone who kept lying to you and was willing to have you give up your baby to an unstable family. Plus Jane has other things to worry about — like her teaching assistant job that got messed up. She requested to work with middle-schoolers and now she’s going to have to work at a Catholic high school. Jane just hopes that her past horror stories of high school won’t repeat themselves as she’s in this new position to finish her schooling.

Rafael makes a call to Jane apologizing for the way he acted the other day when she and Michael told him they wanted to keep the baby. He tells her that he’s looking forward to working out a custody schedule with her and Michael. Jane doesn’t mention that she and Michael aren’t exactly speaking at the moment … and Rafael doesn’t tell Jane that he has feelings for her. Looks like both are keeping some pretty critical information from each other. After the phone call ends, Rafael is greeted at the door by Michael and two cops who arrest him. Petra is in the background telling him that she had to tell them what he “did” to her. What a complete liar! I’m sure Michael is loving this scene, though.

Meanwhile, Rogelio is helping Xo with her next big performance, telling her that she needs a band. And lucky for her, he knows a few good ones and is willing to get them for her. Things get a bit steamy during this weird rehearsal and they only get weirder when Melissa, Rogelio’s ex-wife and Jane-the-virgin-xo-rogelio2'current manager, walks in on Xo and Rogelio just before they kiss.

Melissa tells Rogelio to go downstairs for an interview and he puts Melissa in charge of getting Xo the best band possible. While Rogelio is still in the room, Melissa reassures him that she’ll get that done and that she also can’t wait for their dinner with Xo and Jane. Xo is sincere in telling Melissa that she wants their families to blend well together, but once Rogelio is gone, Melissa shows her true colors. She tells Xo to leave Rogelio alone and calls her a gold digger, only interested in his money and fame. Clearly, Melissa hasn’t heard the whole story between Rogelio and Xo — or maybe she’s just that jealous and fake.

It’s finally dinner time and the appropriate hashtag for the event is #awkwardfamilydinner because it is painfully awkward. Jane meets her twin step-sisters Victoria and Valeria and it’s clear that they are truly Melissa’s daughters. Rogelio keeps bragging about Jane and the twins aren’t having it. They bring up Jane’s unique issue and she’s floored that the two even know about it. Looks like Papa Rogelio had to spill the beans on that one. Before the night is over Jane gets a present from Rogelio — a brand new car. You could tell how jealous the twins were — and Jane isn’t too happy about it either.

It’s Jane’s first day at the Catholic school and before she even gets to introduce herself to the whole class, she notices that Jane-the-virgin-job2'it includes none other than Victoria and Valeria. She mentions that she knows the twins and then the unthinkable happens. The twins wonder if it’s correct that they’re at a Catholic school and when the nuns clear up any confusion, Victoria and Valeria proceed to ask them why would they be taught by an unmarried pregnant lady, leaving Jane to explain her special situation to the nuns in hopes that they understand. The nuns agree to keep her there as a student teacher, but on one condition — no more drama from her or the twins.

Seriously, these girls put the classic high-school Mean Girls to shame.

Rafael sees Jane and tells her about how he spent last night in jail thanks to Petra. Jane obviously doesn’t believe that Rafael would hurt Petra, but now she can see the situation he’s in. She also tells him about her eventful day, thanks to the twins. Jane also reveals why high school was so hard for her: Apparently Xo had a thing with the most popular girl in school’s father and the girl had everyone turn on Jane. Rafael tells Jane that she would’ve caught his attention back in high school and Jane’s heart starts to glow. He also tells her that he’s surprised Michael didn’t tell her about his arrest, since he gladly showed the cops where Rafael was.

Jane tells him that they aren’t exactly on the best of terms. During this moment, there’s a moment of openness between them. I wish they’d both dive into their true feelings, but of course they don’t.

Rafael asks Petra if she really hit herself and, if so, why she would do such a thing — but she isn’t giving in. She acts like she has no idea what he’s talking about and continues to blame him for her bruises. Rafael knows what Petra wants, but he’s not going to give her the money.

Then there’s a knock at the door and it’s someone delivering Zaz’s ashes to the unhappy couple. Rafael hands them over to Petra and tells her that this is her problem now. To further show her who’s boss, Rafael also has the air and water shut off in the suite. When he adds power to the list, Petra’s mother has had enough.

As if things weren’t bad enough, Petra gets a mysterious harassing phone call. She tells the caller about the situation with Rafael and assures them that they’ll have what they’re asking for in the morning.

Jane-the-virgin-trunk'Speaking of escalating difficulties, Jane heads off to her second day of teaching and it doesn’t look like it’s going to go any better. First, she gets parked in thanks to the evil twins in their own new cars from Rogelio. This forces Jane to crawl out the trunk of her car … and have her picture taken while doing so. The twins then let her know about their devious website that they’re running: “Jane the Pregnant Virgin.” Jane runs after the girls and demands that they delete the photos. They refuse and instead, cause a huge scene to get Jane in trouble. One twin drops her tablet on the floor and starts stomping on it and crying like a toddler having a tantrum, and when the nuns and students come over. the girls blame Jane for breaking the tablet. Can someone please show these two little girls who is boss? But Jane already knows where this conversation is headed — a lost teaching position.

To get payback on the twins, Jane puts Rafael and his good looks to use in a mischievous plan. He asks the girls to go swimming with him while Jane grabs their phones to get blackmail photos. After he helps out Jane, the pair have a chat and she tells him that Michael wants to talk, but she’sJane-the-virgin-rafael-jane' not ready to. She has a lot on her plate and she can’t see where Michael will fit in her future. Rafael finally jumps at the obvious opportunity. He tells Jane that he has feelings for her and just wants to let her know in case it changes anything. She can’t believe her ears, because he told her that he viewed her as a sister, and Rafael agrees that he once felt that way, but now his feelings for her are unlike any he’s ever felt. He says he doesn’t believe in fate — but what are the chances that they kissed five years ago and now they’re pregnant, even if it is by accident. Jane’s heart is glowing the entire time while Rafael is talking, but she refuses to let her feelings show. Rafael tells her that he knows it’s a lot to take in, but he just had to let her know how he felt. He leaves — and all I want is for Jane to admit her feelings to him, too.

Since Rafael is so confident after just admitting his love to Jane, he decides he’ll let Petra know he’s one step ahead of her. He has a maid named Olivia who is willing to testify that she saw Petra leaving Rafael’s office without a scratch on her face the day of the supposed attack. Rafael tells Petra she can either drop the charges and get out of his suite or he’ll let Olivia tell her tale. Petra has no other choice than to pack her things, and Rafael makes sure she has her dearly departed boyfriend Zaz along with her. Anyone think this means Petra is finally out of Rafael’s life? Anyone?

Jane-the-virgin-job'Jane shows up to the twin’s school to threaten them with the photos she got from their phones. She lets the devilish duo know that she’ll make her own website with these ugly selfies and secret risqué boyfriend pictures on the front page if they don’t go to Sister Margaret and tell them the truth. One twin starts to cry and tells Jane that Jane’s so lucky to have great parents who care about her since their mother doesn’t seem to care at all and they don’t know where their dad is. Jane feels bad for them so once the twins confess to Sister Margaret, Jane says she forgives the girls. They aren’t off the hook with the nuns, but Jane has her job back thanks to the confession and it seems like Jane might have some new twin besties, too.

I was surprised the sisters allowed Jane to return, but it looks like Sister Margaret has another idea for keeping Jane around. In a less-than-holy mindset, she believes the twin’s website will actually make people visit the church to visit Jane. I guess … as long as it’s in the interest of the church.

Since Jane has forgiveness in her heart, she texts Michael and agrees to meet with him. At first I was so upset because I thought this meant for sure that Jane was giving up on her feelings for Rafael, but I need to give Jane more credit. Michael sets up the same scene that was in the telenovela he watched with Jane when they first met … well, sort of. Jane lets him know that she’s forgiven him, but she can’t be with him and gives Michael her engagement ring back. She tells him that something has changed, but lies when she says that she can’t explain it.

Petra and her mother are sharing a room together at the hotel. There’s a knock at the door and it’s not room service, but an angry man pointing a gun at Petra. He asks her if she thought she could hide by switching rooms, but she tells him that it’s only because of the situation with Rafael. Before anyone gets shot, Petra grabs Zaz’s urn and knocks the man out cold with it. Looks like Zaz actually did something good for once.

Jane-the-virgin-jane-rafael'After Xo’s performance, Rafael sees Jane outside and goes up to her, wondering why she’s so upset. She knows her answer will change everything for the rest of her life, but she dives in and tells Rafael that she broke up with Michael. Rafael runs over to sweep Jane up and kiss her. — just like a scene out of a telenovela. More specifically the one Jane watched with Michael. As the two continue to kiss, the white flowers on the tree begin to fall just as the snow fell in Jane’s dream romance. Not ashamed to admit I was whooping and clapping with joy at this moment. I just hope that the two get to stay together.

What were your thoughts on “Chapter 5” of Jane the Virgin? Do you think Melissa will lay off of Xo and Jane or continue to manipulate them? Do you think the twins were sincere and won’t mess with Jane anymore? I want to believe that they’re sorry for what they did but with a mother like that who knows. Will Jane ever get back with Michael? I hope Jane tries to stay with Rafael but she might get scared and run back to Michael. If it’s a true telenovela we’ll definitely be seeing more drama between Rafael and Michael. Please Jane just try and stay with Rafael. What do you think the issue was between Petra and the person on the phone? Do you think that’s why this man with a gun came to kill her off? I’m guessing it has to deal with money since Rafael has a lot of it and that’s all that Petra is interested in. Leave your thoughts in the comments.

  1. You saw how Rafi reacted badly to Jane wanting to keep the baby..He doesn’t want her and just wants the baby..So she forgives Mike for lying then lies to him and has been lying to him the whole two years they been together cause she has had feelings for Rafi..makes sense? NOPE……You saw how Rafi reacted so badly to Jane wanting to keep the baby but he says sorry and she forgives him but it’s just Mike she can’t forgive?….With Michael it’s love…With Rafi it’s lust and some dream nonsense that she has had drilled into her head of some perfect family that isn’t gonna happen
