‘Kobe Bryant’s Muse’ — The NBA star gets personal in Showtime documentary

Despite a recent pair of major injuries, 36-year-old NBA legend Kobe Bryant is still among the league’s top scorers this season — but he knows his storied time on the court is limited. And he knows he has plenty of people to thank for his good fortune.

Brainstorming a new Nike ad campaign with his wife Vanessa during the 2013 NBA season, the pair happened upon the idea of muses — spotlighting the people and experiences that shaped and championed Bryant’s will to succeed, both on and off the court. Realizing that he had much to say on the topic and no patience to pen a book, Bryant granted filmmaker Gotham Chopra unprecedented access to his life and inner circle over the course of nearly a year, chronicling his journey toward whatever the future holds.

“Now that my career’s coming to an end, I think it will be pretty cool to tell the genesis of where the mentality came from or the inspiration came from,” Bryant said at a summer press event for the resulting documentary, Kobe Bryant’s Muse. “And what I found through the process,” he reveals in its trailer, “is that it became more than a documentary — it became therapy on film.”

Kobe Bryant’s Muse premieres Saturday, Feb. 28 at 9pm ET/PT on Showtime.
