Discovery Life Channel’s “The Day I Almost Died” recounts brushes with death

The title of Discovery Life Channel’s new eight-part series, The Day I Almost Died, is fairly straightforward, and is about just what you might think it is: first-person accounts of people’s brushes with death.

In each episode, victims recount how they found themselves, either through dumb luck (like a woman thrown out of a boat when it hits a wake) or dumb actions (like a girl who attempts to “car surf”) in deadly situations within a matter of seconds.

Here are the episodes that make up The Day I Almost Died (descriptions from Discovery Life Channel; all times ET).

“Nailed” — July 11 at 10pm. When Christina realizes she’s going to be late to her morning meeting, she sends a text from her car while she is driving. In the moment she looks down to send it, her car careens into a guardrail, which spears through her car in an instant. Rebecca is enjoying the final day of summer on a boat with college friends. When they hit a wake, Rebecca is thrown into the water and sucked toward the boat’s propeller. Dan swallows swords for a living. But one performance nearly ends his career… and his life.

“Trial By Fire” — July 18 at 10pm. When a corn picking machine grinds up Sampson’s hand in the middle of a cornfield, it’s only the beginning of this farmer’s harrowing experience. Trapped by the machine, he’ll have to do the unimaginable before he narrowly escapes with his life. Joy’s home improvement project to build a new roof turns into a nightmare. When she “flat lines” just as she arrives at the hospital, doctors must take extraordinary measures to save her life. Janne’s life changes in an instant when he goes for a swim on a sunny hot day at a Southern California beach.

“Limb For Limb” — July 25 at 10pm. Young Jake is alone and bored and decides to go for a swim in the apartment complex pool. When he loses his key and can’t get out of the pool area, he tries to jump the fence, which has devastating consequences. When rodeo bull rider Jeffrey gets on a bull named Black Friday, he knows it won’t be an easy ride. But Jeffrey never expected it would almost kill him. Homeowner Pat gets out her miter saw to do some home repair work. In a moment of inattention, the saw blade slices down and takes one of her limbs with it.

“Earth, Surf & Fire” — Aug. 1 at 10pm. Truck mechanic Bruce is making his last repair of the day underneath a big rig. When a co-worker jumps inside the truck, it comes crashing off its jack and onto Bruce.  High school student Hannah joins her friends on top of a car to go “car surfing.” When the driver runs a stop sign, Hanna is thrown from the car and into the street.  Jonathan is hunting on opening day of deer season. When he attempts to hide one of his guns in his truck, it unexpectedly fires leaving Jonathan unconscious and alone.

The Day I Almost Died airs Saturdays at 10pm ET on Discovery Life Channel beginning July 11.

  2. I am a Negro male that almost died I had my left arm ripped off on my farm and my collar bone cut half into doctors held my heart in hand while support muscles were reattached to hold my heart. I was thirty minutes from hospital ER got lost and I had to be transported by car. I had no blood when arrived at hospital. I was put into an ambulance because medevac was out on call. I heard the nurses say on the way to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma which was another hour away that he will not live, but here I am with a college degree after amputation. My entire life changed. I have miracles for more stories concerning this event.

  3. I was nearly killed when a 623 WHEEL TRACTOR-SCRAPERS ran me down , knot me down and then ran over my lower leg!! 2 years later we removed my lift foot, as a result of my injures back in 2006

  4. For anyone interested in possibly appearing in future episodes of The Day I Almost Died, the show was produced by Indigo Films Company. They have a Facebook site they monitor regularly for new story ideas for both this series as well as a number of others they produce. Good luck and best wishes to all those who have survived your own near death experiences.

  5. Hey Larry. Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy the series. I am featured in the season finale titled, “Shafted.” I have seen that episode as well as all of the episodes and I thought they were very well produced and entertaining. I know my episode, or at least my part of the episode, was extremely well produced and stayed very true to my story as it actually happened. The filming, recreations and interviews were all dead on and while I didn’t think they spent enough time fully explaining everything I went through including multiple amputations and countless surgeries, infections and complications during my still ongoing ten year recovery, but they had to condense my entire story into just 15 minutes. Hopefully you will find a series more suited to your tastes. Best of luck to you.

  6. I would love to make a little cash and share the story of nearly cutting my head off with a chainsaw in a remote community in the sierras, I severed my jugular vein and nicked my carotid atery! Its a great story of self preservation and guts, and a helicopter ride to Sutter Trauma where I underwent vascular surgery after losing 800 ccs of blood , I don’t know how to get on the show but my story is a great story of survival and guts, Thanks

  7. I would like to find out how I could get my story on this show. I watch it faithfully and would like to be able to share my story with the show. I did die and was dead for 25 minutes . My Dr. calls me a walking miracle.

  8. I was shot and died . The doc did not give up on me and as a result I was brought back from the dead ! I fought for a long time but I finally got back to doing all the things I did before that horrific day….. While I was dead I saw thing that came true in the future ?????? I do not know why I saw things that did not exist back then but they do now , so why did I see those things ??????

  9. I was buried alive with three friends of mine from a thunderstorm that came out of no where. I was the only survivor.I was 11yrs old and the girls.. one was 11yrs, and the twins were 10yrs. A lightening bolt hit the top of a claypit and caused an avalanche that buried us alive in the side of a clay mountain…HORRIFIC! !!!!!

  10. I bled out in my bathroom for 30 minutes before being found. I had two dieulafoys which were not found for over a month by baffled doctors. I received 50 units of blood had kidney failure, respiratory failure, heart failure and numerous other organs. I refused to give up. My family was told to plan my funeral which they started to do. I was given my last rights by a Catholic priest in the ICU. I still would not give up. I told everyone I was not going to die. They finally took me into surgery for seven hours and saved my life. I truly believe that my intestinal fortitude kept me alive. Everyone kept telling me I was a walking miracle. I have made this story short and sweet and to the point.

  11. Does being flipped upside down in shallow water in your NEW dry suit, (unable to flip myself UP), with a dive buddy who doesn’t understand HOW to purge the air out of your suit, WHILE YOUR AIR GAUGE KEEPS GOING DOWN TOWARD ZERO qualify?

  12. I’ve been close to death way too many times to not feel for these people. When you’re close to death nothing is more important than having confidence in your Doctors and Nurses and having Loved ones around.

  13. This whole network is junk and exploitive just like the rest of the Discovery networks. It is clearly shown in their ratings which consistently struggle to break .10 even on good nights. When they rebranded this network they clearly were not in communication with TLC (also part of discovery) because now the networks are aligning to basically be the same thing. Talk about dumb higher up people over there at Discovery!

    • I couldn’t agree more. I heard that the network is two or three bad quarters away from getting pulled….tough

  14. Yo Mikey, I am not a hater. I just recognize a show that is garbage when I see it. You need to get a life bro.

    • Maybe you have to have some compassion for other people to like this show and you just don’t have any. TOO BAD !

      • Yo Larrie, You are one of those people that if the show is not about you then it is garbage but I would bet that you like SyFy shows thinking they are true life events but when it comes to aTrue story then it becomes no good so you are the one that needs to get a life ……. Watch true stories instead of running down the truth life events !!!!!!!!!! Cartoons are your best shot at Terrific TV LOL !!!!!!!!!

    • LARRIE: ” IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SOMETHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT SOMETHING THEN DO NOT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL ” You should go watch your cartoons and leave the TERRIFIC TRUE STORIES to folks that enjoy watching real life events !!!!!!!!!!!!
