Frank Grillo recently posted this picture of himself as Crossbones in Captain America: Civil War to his Instagram account

We talked a little bit with actor Frank Grillo following his Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour panel for the second season of DirecTV’s Kingdom, and he had some thoughts on next spring’s eagerly awaited entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America Civil War. The 50-year-old actor has finished his work on the feature, in which he plays the villainous Brock Rumlow (aka Crossbones, introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and which he thinks audiences will love.

“I think it will be as good, if not better than, the second one,” Grillo said of Civil War, which hits theaters May 6. “It was a quick [shoot for me] because there are a lot of characters in the film, so they kind of bunched our stuff all together. The Russo Brothers [directors] are now masters in command.”

Not surprisingly, fans can expect lots of physicality from Grillo’s role as Crossbones.

“There’s a lot of that, he said. “Me and [Chris] Evans specifically, and Scarlett [Johansson]. That seems to be all I do!”

That not only seems to be all Grillo does in the Cap films, but also elsewhere. Since his role in Warrior, Grillo has had a run of very physical roles, including the The Purge: Anarchy (The Purge 3 is coming, and Grillo is returning as Sergeant, saying he will be running all over Rhode Island in it), his part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his starring role in the MMA drama Kingdom.

“After I did the film Warrior, it changed my career,” Grillo told a TCA panel of reporters for Kingdom (Season 2 premieres Oct. 14 on DirecTV’s Audience Network). “And that was a physical role. And I got put into this niche of, you know, the older guy who can act a bit and can be physical and be convincing.

Grillo also addressed how he remains in shape for these roles in middle age.

“The last thing you want to do at my age — at 65, thank you, Tucker [Grillo’s 33-year-old Kingdom costar Jonathan Tucker had earlier joked before a panel of reporters that Grillo is much older than he really is] — is kind of get out of shape and try to get back into shape. So you’re better off just staying where you are, and, you know, it’s for me, it’s fun. It’s fun to stay in shape.”

Grillo also told the panel about advice he got from friend Liam Neeson, who, when he was 56, began getting different types of roles as an action hero thanks to films like Taken. Neeson told Grillo, “Keep your knees, Frank. Just keep your knees, and it will be okay.”

“So that’s what I do. I work out and make sure my knees aren’t hurt, and it’s, you know, just been a great ride, to be [doing this at] my age. … I’m sure it will end in the future soon. But right now, I’m still in good enough shape to do it.”

  1. i have a feeling that Ant Man will be like Quicksilver was in Days of Future Past (not the one in Age of Ultron). His part will be small but by far will be the scene stealer in the film, just like Michael Peña´s Luis was in his stand alone film. especially when there will be soo much drama going on, we can always trust Paul Rudd to bring the comedy. But i do think is unfair they dont put the trailers online for the entire world to see them, the big part of the box office this types of movies get is from the international markets so why not begin their excitment right away, seems bad to me
