“I watched every show!” sang Brooklyn Nine-Nine Star Andy Samberg as he emerged from his TV-watching bunker to open the 67th Emmy Awards. As hoped for, the actor began the night with a musical number that referenced (among others), Les Miserables, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Billy Crystal before settling down to a night full of surprises and fun from the Microsoft Theater L.A. Live. The comedian is also grateful for actors who blazed the Emmy-hosting trail before him saying, “I’m so honored to join the proud ranks of Emmy hosts, incredible legendary people like … Robert Blake and Bill Cosby? Oh no! I gotta get outta here!”

Viola Davis became the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Best Lead Actress on a Drama Series (How to Get Away With Murder), and Jon Hamm won his first Emmy (after seven previous nominations) for his final go-round as Don Draper on Mad Men, during an eventful night at the 2015 Emmy Awards.

Davis gave an impassioned acceptance speech, saying: “Let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

For Hamm’s part, he modestly quipped, following his standing ovation, “There has been a terrible mistake, clearly.”
