The Fast and the Furious franchise has been alive since its first film hit theaters in 2001. As the series has progressed we have come to expect a level of consistency in the action and visuals. The plot has always been fairly constant, relying on the feeling of family within the crew. But in the new film, The Fate of the Furious, that family will be challenged when the leader becomes the team’s biggest foe.
Dom (Vin Diesel) is honeymooning with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) in Cuba. Just chilling and driving the hottest car on the island, Dom remains the epitome of cool. When a mysterious woman named Cipher (Charlize Theron) comes into his life and interrupts his leisure on the tropical island, things are about to heat up.
Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is pulled away from his private life to do a secret job and he enlists Dom’s crew to get the job done. Since Hobbs has really become part of the family to Dom, of course he says yes. But during what is thought to be a routine mission to get the weapon and return it to the shadowy government agencies behind the scenes, Dom goes rogue. Now he is in direct opposition to those he loves, but what is the motivation behind this swift heel turn? And will anyone emerge from this situation unscathed?
Fast and the Furious films have become legendary for their fast cars, beautiful people, and truly exciting action sequences. Much like earlier films in the franchise — this is the eighth installment if you didn’t catch the clever pun (F8) in the film’s name — the action and racing sequences do not disappoint.
Diesel is a man of few words in this film, but his actions speak volumes in his portrayal of Dom. Johnson kicks butt throughout and the supporting cast from many of the previous Furious films including Rodriguez, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Tyrese Gibson is along for the wild ride. Plus, seeing Jason Statham back from F7 is a real nice touch.
What really elevates the film is Theron as Cipher. She is smart, sexy, and as devious as any villain in the franchise. Always in control, Cipher knows how to push all the right buttons and Theron embodies this onscreen.
Moving to a post-Paul Walker era in this franchise, director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) takes a solid, if understated, road with this effort and it accelerates through a fast and furious ride with the pedal to the metal.
The Fate of the Furious is available On Demand beginning July 11. Check your cable system for availability.
