Scott Bakula Hints at What’s Ahead for Pride on ‘NCIS: New Orleans’

When production wrapped for the night, the NCIS: New Orleans cast and crew threw star Scott Bakula a birthday bash fit for a king, complete with a sheet cake decorated with the image of his character, Special Agent Dwayne Pride. The following day, Bakula was back in Pride’s shoes, dispensing New Orleans-style justice and telling us all about it.

NCIS: New Orleans continues its sixth season on CBS with Tuesday’s new episode “Matthew 5:9” (10pm ET/PT) in which Special Agent Christopher Lasalle’s (Lucas Black) desperate hunt for the truth about his brother Cade (Clayne Crawford) comes to a critical point when evidence suggests a drug-trafficking ring may be involved.

Pride travels to Alabama to join Lasalle in searching for clues and assisting local law enforcement to track Cade’s last known whereabouts. Of course, Pride is going to do this investigation his own way.

“This guy wears his heart on his sleeve, anyway, so when you start messing around with his family or extended members of his family, he has trouble doing both things — taking care of his people and also doing his business,” Bakula says of Pride’s not-by-the-book mentality. “It’s a battle. It’s something he fights all the time.”

The case of Lasalle and his brother is deeply personal for Pride. “He has those kinds of parental emotions, and he and Lasalle have been together the longest,” Bakula says. “He’s nurtured him and been his mentor. He knows Lasalle’s story and knows the challenges he’s faced with his brother. Hopefully, the rest of Pride’s team can handle what’s going on in New Orleans so he can really devote himself to being there to help Lasalle in any way he can. It’s a powerful arc, and it’s explosive in many ways.”

It’s been a rough year for Pride, as well. He’s been suffering from nightmares, insomnia and hallucinations stemming from his traumatic experience being kidnapped and drugged last season. Bakula hints that these visions will put Pride on the path to some important realizations in coming episodes.

“He gets some information about some events that happened when he was a very young person that kind of help organize his mind a little bit in terms of looking back on his life and understanding why he is who he is,” Bakula says. “I think that’s going to be satisfying for the audience and, I think, for his character.”

    • If taking care of your family is bullshit then I feel sorry for your family.
I respect and admire someone like that.
Garth Brooks took time off from singing to be with his family and the fans did not
leave him. Lucas Black is a fine actor and he may come back later and surprise us all.

      • If you dig deeper, Lucas Black doesn’t say anything about his family. He’s doing the next few Fast & Furious movies, etc. He wanted to do something else. It’s not really about his family from what I’ve read on his end, not the show’s end. The show puts out polite press releases. The truth is that he was probably bored.

    • I was done when Percy left. That’s TV. MASH was the only show that I ever continued to watch after a second principle cast member left. Good luck to Scott and thank you Lucas Black for the fine acting.

  1. I have loved Lucas Black since I first watched him in Toyko Drift, love that accent. LaSalle and Pride make the show work as partners. I’m truly upset that he will no longer be on the show and there is no one that can take his place. Hope it was his idea to leave and there is no bad blood among the cast.

  2. Bishop is young Energetic and is a thinker and Puzzle solver plus she is Dam CUTE
She can be short & Kick BUTT & is a great personality

  3. I looked forward to Tuesday because I knew that NCIS New Orleans would be on at 10:00p.m. but now since Christopher will no longer be on the show Tuesday night show have no meaning for me as for as the show goes.

    • T I don’t believe for a minute Chris chose to leave the show. Mark Harmon says that

every time he gets upset at an actor. he’s ruining NCIS with bishop and now I don’t know who he will replace LaSalle’s character with.

      • Lucas Black is leaving because he just signed up for the next 3 fast and the furious movies. Doubt he would have time to do both. Just surprised they killed him off as opposed to him moving away but maybe it’s also a sign that this show won’t last another three years…

        • Where did you see that he signed up for the movies? I understood that FF9 was the final entry for the series. Yes, they said that after FF6 he would be back but the filming conflicted with his ‘Nola gig. Nice thing about the movies is that he could take his family with him to/near the filming location.

    • I figured it wouldn’t be long for LaSalle to leave. Since his buddy Percy had left for the FBI. Why not have him to join her and they both can come back once in a while to help out NCIS

      • I have written about Percy and LaSalle for a while now (22 stories) I had started a new one when I heard that Cane was killed. Sat down this morning and finished it with a surprising take (even to me don’t know how I thought this one up!). There are several fanfiction webistes out there with stories about Percy and LaSalle. FanFiction.net, WattPAD.com and Archieve of our Own. You have to register but it’s not hard to use them. You can sort by characters and by the TV show. You’ll love the sites and stories.

  4. So sad to see Chtistopher LaSalle go. Loved his character, but understand Lucas Black wanting to spend more time with his family. RIP, Chris, and Roll, Tide always!

  5. I just finished binge watching NCIS Nola and I must say the previous seasons were way better than this one and season 5. The whole story line with the blonde ghost who kept trying to get Pride to step into the light was absolutely annoying. Hanna’s story line is annoying and she just does not fit the role of a federal agent. Tammy, Christopher, Miss Loretta, Sabastian, Triple P and Pride carry the show, but Christopher was the most authentic. Can’t really see how the show can build from here. Such a shame. This is like losing Ziva and being stuck with Bishop. If any character should be permalently eliminated it’s Bishop. Oh well, another great show on the decline. I hope the network reads these reviews. And if the decision to get rid of one more essential character was made because the actor, Black, wanted out, we the fans are left powerless and frustrated. I’m moving on to Wednesday night already to watch my ultimate favorite show – Seal Team.

    • Bishop is young Energetic and is a thinker and Puzzle solver plus she is Dam CUTE
She can be short & Kick BUTT & is a great personality

  6. wow, chill out people, this happens to most successful shows and hopefully this will push the show to a new and fresh direction. all 3 NCIS shows are on my favorite list so hopefully Prides daughter and her new cop boyfriend join the show and carry it further. he would be a good new mix to an already fantastic show

  7. I’m bummed about Chris Lasalle, but if Lucas Black wanted to leave, what else could they do?

Really, you are all acting childish. Change happens. Sometimes it sucks. Deal with it. I’ve LIVED that scene. Three times, actually. Brother killed in service, another died 2 years prior and a father with Lewy Body dementia, a WWII vet, who died last year. Be grateful it’s just a character.

    • The only show that I can bear in the franchise is NCIS:LA. The original is in, what, season 17? Let Gibbs retire and everyone else move along. I never could get into NOLA. But, it’s just TV. If I don’t watch, the world will still turn.

      • Two of the original agents are gone – Nate and Dominic. Dominic was killed and Nate makes guest appearances from time to time. They’ve all gone through some changes. If CSI could survive without Grissom, anything is possible.

  8. Well I’m done with the show. Christopher was the real deal. I tolerate Pride been watching Cch Pounder since The Shield dont care for Hana at all. Nothing left for me unless you could persuade Walton Goggins to leave that crappy Unicorn deal he’s got going on now

  9. I love all the NCIS’s!!! However, I can’t watch NCIS New Orleans ANYMORE since you killed off Chris Lasalle!!! I just can not stand this and do not understand WHY!!!!!! I hated it when you killed off Percy, but I made the decision to “hang in there” with the show!!! Now you have “gone and done it” by killing Lasalle!!!! I will not be able to watch anymore!!!!! You made a BAD MISTAKE”!!!!

    • I know I didn’t want to see him go either and I was saddened because he’s been with Pride since the first time outside. But we have to support the real life person he is. It was his choice to leave the show. No one fired him…I do wish his character wasn’t dead and we could hope he would return to the show at a later date. I’m sure the show had their reasons for ending his character in this manner. I hope we see Pride get justice for both the Lasalle brothers, but mostly for Christopher. He will truly be missed. I wish him all the best in what’s next in life outside NCIS New Orleans. It helps me to know he chose to leave the show on his own terms.

    • I agree with Carolyn. It was sad losing Percy–and now Christopher! Makes it seem like the show is going downhill. A lot of programs lose their interest once the main characters leave. Look at Two and a Half Men and Hawaii 5-0. I do like the new Magnum PI though. I think he is better than Tom Seleck was but Selleck is doing a great job with Blue Bloods. Need some more females in that family however.

  10. Loved Christopher. He will be missed. Hope he shows up in another show. Hope all goes well for him and his family.

  11. First you write out Brody then bring in some questionable replacements, and I think the show took a real down turn then. Later it seems Pride is moving out but you came to your senses and brought him back as the team leader. Now LaSalle is gone? Its gong to make it real difficult to watch, because if he is gone I fear another poor decision on a replacement is no the horizon. Hey, why not bring back Brody at least? Or hopefully LaSalle’s demise is one of Pride’s drug trip dreams, but I am doubting it…reluctantly.

  12. I’m crying and I’m deeply hurt! Why would they kill off LaSalle? He is the SHOW and Pride is just along for the ride! If this isn’t a dream and he doesn’t return, I will be thru with NCIS New
Orleans! LaSalle was like family to all of his fans! Get him back ASAP or watch your ratings plummet, which will be your fault! NCIS New Orleans is the BEST NCIS of ALL 3!

  13. Killing off Lucas Blacks character from NCIS New Orleans was another very stupid move from CBS. If tonight’s episode turns out
not to a bad dream of Dwayne’s , then a good bit of the life and
excitement has been taken out of this show !!!!!

  14. They should have killed off Dwayne Pride instead of LaSalle. LaSalle was the only reason I watched the show. This season’s tormented Pride storyline is ridiculous. Can’t stand Hana, and they lost a great story line when the Sonya Percy character was written out. I always hoped the Country Mouse – City Mouse storyvline would come back. This has always been my least favorite of the NCIS shows, but now I’m done. No reason to watch it anymore.

  15. Christopher with the cutest southern accent is gone. I can’t believe it and will not continue to watch the show. Too heartbreaking

  16. So sad that Lucas Black left the show! Hope everything is okay with him and his family. Our prayers are withe you! We will definitely
    Miss you!

  17. Heartbroken! He was my favorite with Scott Bakula. I can’t go to sleep now, too sad! But I know it was his choice. I kept saying to myself, please let it be a dream or stunt to catch someone! I do not know how you will top him!

  18. Been following Scott Bakula’s career since the 80’s, yet I would have been able to accept his leaving the show a lot better than I am Lucas Black’s departure,IF this proves to be the plot.Let’s hope it is instead Pride’s LAST dream, hallucination,or vision…I think everyone is tired of that thread and ready to get back to the way the show used to be.
