The Walking Dead
AMC, 9pm
Series Finale!
“It’s going to be pee-pee pants city here real soon,” as AMC’s juggernaut The Walking Dead concludes after over 10 years, 11 seasons and 177 episodes. Fans of the postapocalyptic thriller may smile remembering that was one of Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) many classic lines. Norman Reedus, who has played Daryl Dixon from the series’ start, shared what that last day of shooting was like. “I walked out with my entire outfit. I didn’t change clothes. I was hugging people and crying and saying goodbye to everybody that I just ended up driving home in my outfit. So I have all of it.” In addition to his costume, Reedus also confessed to having about eight of his character’s famed crossbows, among other set décor, which he’s taken over the years. Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie, shared: “I remember a lot of trees, a lot of running in the woods, a lot of sweat. But what you really remember is the sense of people. Our tribe, our little sweaty team. And just how much everyone enjoyed being there and knew that this was once in a lifetime.” But Daryl’s and Maggie’s stories, along with Carol’s, Negan’s — even Rick and Michonne’s — are far from over, as AMC has multiple spinoff series in the works. There is hope and a lot of possibility ahead! — Barb Oates

Welcome to Chippendales
Hulu
New Series!
This eight-episode true-crime saga tells the outrageous story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani), an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of Chippendales, the world’s greatest male-stripping empire, in the late 1970s/early ’80s — and let nothing stand in his way, even resorting to murder-for-hire. The cast also features Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, Annaleigh Ashford and Quentin Plair. According to Nanjiani, who is also an executive producer, beyond the titillating criminal and sexual aspects of this story, and its period setting, “it really becomes about what it means to be successful in America and the kind of things that you have to do to be successful [here], particularly as someone who’s not American. How does America treat someone who doesn’t look like how a lot of the country thinks Americans should look, and what does it take to succeed in that kind of world? So … it’s really applicable today, too.” The first two episodes are available today; new episodes drop Tuesdays.

Whether you’re a history buff, a film fan or both, prepare to travel the globe, immersing yourself in the lives, loves and legends of some of antiquity’s most iconic rulers. First up is the beloved, award-winning 1956 film adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Tony-winning Broadway musical The King and I. Yul Brynner — who also starred in the stage production — plays the dour but dashing King Mongkut of Siam, who brings spirited British widow Anna (Deborah Kerr) and her young son to his country to educate his wives and children, and realizes he may be the recipient of the most important lessons of all. Next up, Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor (1987) won all nine Oscars for which it was nominated. The sweeping epic follows the journey of child emperor Pu Yi from ruler to political prisoner to ordinary citizen, and is culled from Pu Yi’s own 1964 memoir. Then, Claudette Colbert wows as the glamorous title character in Cecil B. DeMille’s Cleopatra (1934). Though the film debuted just as the wildly restrictive Hays Code was ramping up, DeMille delighted in portraying his Egyptian queen in full sexual, political and intellectual power. Finally, Richard Burton plays the legendary Macedonian ruler in Robert Rossen’s historical epic Alexander the Great (1956), which won Rossen an Outstanding Directorial Achievement nomination from the Director’s Guild of America.

Catch a Classic!
If you’re looking for something to tune in to on today’s Thanksgiving holiday, but you’re not much into watching football or parades, MOVIES! and TCM are offering nice servings of classic movies that you can dip in and out of, in between your second or third helpings of turkey and pumpkin pie. Beginning early in the morning, MOVIES! presents several titles that are mostly comedies and/or musicals, with one notable classic holiday drama. The featured films are: Cheaper by the Dozen (1950), You Can’t Take It With You (1938), Auntie Mame (1958), Move Over, Darling (1963), My Favorite Wife (1940), A Christmas Carol (1951), How to Steal a Million (1966), The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947), It’s a Wonderful World (1939), Nothing Sacred (1937) and March of the Wooden Soldiers (1934). TCM’s day also starts bright and early, and is divided into two parts. Starting in primetime, the network shifts to the concluding night of its monthlong Thursday salute to actor James Mason, with five of his memorable movies: Hitchcock’s fun spy thriller North by Northwest (1959), featuring the actor at his charmingly villainous best as he pursues Cary Grant across the country; A Star Is Born (1954), which earned Mason a Best Actor Oscar nomination alongside Best Actress nominee Judy Garland; Odd Man Out (1947), a film noir that was one of his last British films before he began working in Hollywood; The Prisoner of Zenda (1952); and Julius Caesar (1953), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy/history play that also features Best Actor nominee Marlon Brando and John Gielgud.

Cinerama 70th Anniversary
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Tonight, Turner Classic Movies marks the 70th anniversary of Cinerama, the widescreen process that used three projectors to cast motion pictures onto a giant, deeply curved screen. Cinerama was among the novel techniques developed by the movie industry at the time to keep audiences coming to theaters in the face of increasing competition from television. Starting with its initial title, This Is Cinerama, which debuted Sept. 30, 1952, Cinerama’s first decade of usage produced travelogues and documentaries. Only two films with stories were produced using the original, three-strip Cinerama process, and both of those will be airing on TCM this evening. While even the best of modern TVs cannot replicate the full Cinerama experience, it is easy to see why these epic productions were chosen to be presented in that immersive manner. Up first is The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962), producer/codirector George Pal’s film that combines biography and fantasy to tell the story of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm (Laurence Harvey and Karlheinz Böhm) interspersed with fanciful presentations of some of the classic fairy tales the siblings collected. Following this is the TCM premiere of the 2021 documentary short Rescuing a Fantasy Classic, which details the daunting technical effort that went into restoring Brothers Grimm in its original Cinerama format. After that is the second and last story-based feature to have been produced in the three-strip Cinerama format, also from 1962 — How the West Was Won. Boasting three directors — Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall — and a large cast including John Wayne, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Gregory Peck, Debbie Reynolds, Karl Malden, Spencer Tracy and more, this Best Picture Oscar-nominated film tells the story of America’s westward expansion through five stories set between 1839 and 1889.
