Following its very well-received premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, this two-part documentary from ABC News Studios begins streaming on Hulu. It offers a galvanizing look at iconic actor and model Brooke Shields and follows her transformation from a sexualized young girl into a woman who ultimately discovered her power. Holding a mirror up to a society that objectifies women and girls, her story shows the perils and triumphs of gaining agency in a hostile world.

The 2023 Major League Baseball season is now underway after officially starting last Thursday, and MOVIES! is getting into the swing of it with a hard-hitting lineup of five classic baseball movies airing this afternoon and evening. Leading off is the Oscar-nominated biographical drama The Pride of St. Louis (1952), about the life of Hall of Fame pitcher Jerome Herman “Dizzy” Dean (portrayed by Dan Dailey). Joanne Dru and Richard Crenna, in one of his earlier film roles, costar. Next is the comedy It Happened in Flatbush (1942), whose story is inspired by the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers’ first pennant win in 21 years. Lloyd Nolan plays a washed-up ballplayer who returns to Brooklyn to manage his old team, but ends up clashing with — and falling for — the new owner (Carole Landis). Then, in the comedy It Happens Every Spring (1949), Ray Milland plays a chemistry professor who accidentally discovers a fluid that repels wood. Realizing the possibilities from applying this to a baseball, he takes a leave of absence to join the big leagues, where he becomes an unhittable pitching sensation. Jean Peters and Paul Douglas costar. Batting cleanup is The Kid From Left Field (1953), which re-teams star Dailey with his Pride of St. Louis director Harmon Jones. In the comedy, a struggling baseball team goes through a phenomenal transformation when a washed-up former player (Dailey) secretly passes winning tips to the team through his son, who is the team’s batboy (Billy Chapin). But can the turnaround last when the team owner promotes the kid to manager? The film costars Anne Bancroft in one of her earlier film appearances. Today’s final film is Angels in the Outfield (1951), the original comedy led by Douglas, Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn.

A century ago today, on April 4, 1923, brothers Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner founded the iconic Warner Bros. studio. Turner Classic Movies continues its monthlong celebration of all things Warner today with a day devoted to films from some of the stars whose names are most associated with WB as contract players during the early Hollywood era when studios had all the power and basically maintained “stables” of big-screen celebrities exclusively for their own productions (though they would sometimes “loan” an actor or actress to another studio). Salutes to Warner’s great female studio contract players will air on TCM Tuesdays this month, while on Wednesdays, the daylong lineups will focus on the studio’s male stars. Up first in today’s spotlight on legendary Warner Bros. actresses are two features starring Myrna Loy: The Great Divide (1929) and The Truth About Youth (1930). As part of its monthlong celebration of the legendary Warner Bros. studio’s centennial, Turner Classic Movies is devoting each Monday and Thursday evening to films from legendary directors who helmed films for Warner. Tonight’s first Thursday lineup begins with a focus on Michael Curtiz, starting with his Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), led by Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland in one of their many onscreen pairings. The film is preceded by Rabbit Hood, Chuck Jones’ 1949 Merrie Melodies animated short starring Bugs Bunny. Bette Davis leads two somewhat campy but terrific thrillers made in her later career this evening, and she costars with fellow legends in both. First is What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). Directed by Robert Aldrich, this darkly humorous and horrific cult classic is deliciously gothic and campy fun as it follows an aging former child star (Davis, in a Best Actress Oscar-nominated performance) who torments her paraplegic sister (Joan Crawford), a former movie star, in an old Hollywood mansion. The success of the film opened up doors for these and other actresses to star in subsequent similar types of psychological thrillers led by older women, and one of those, also starring Davis, is next on tonight’s lineup: Hush … Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). Also helmed by Aldrich, this psychological thriller stars Davis as an aging, reclusive Southern belle plagued by a horrifying family secret who descends into madness following the arrival of a lost relative (played by Olivia de Havilland). Costarring alongside the iconic actresses are other stars who were in the latter stages of their careers: Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead and Mary Astor in her final film role.

Wells & Co. does until CEO — and wizard! — Humphrey Wells and his righthand goblin Dennis Tanner (Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill) ask Paul to locate the Portable Door that can take the opener anywhere they want. Paul and Sophie quickly learn “that the company is a purveyor of [manipulative] magic,” Henson says, and that they have their own latent magical powers. This evening, Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong celebration of Warner Bros.’ centennial turns to the films the studio produced during World War II, many of which were used to boost morale on the homefront. The lineup begins with the iconic Casablanca (1942). Still one of Warner’s most famous productions, this enduringly quotable Best Picture Oscar-winning romantic drama is led by Best Actor nominee Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid and Supporting Actor nominee Claude Rains. Following that is the Oscar-nominated submarine thriller Destination Tokyo (1943), led by Cary Grant and John Garfield; director Raoul Walsh’s Oscar-nominated Objective, Burma! (1945), starring Errol Flynn and based on the real-life actions of Merrill’s Marauders in Burma; and director Michael Curtiz’s Oscar-winning musical comedy This Is the Army (1943), based on Irving Berlin’s Broadway musical and starring George Murphy, Joan Leslie and Ronald Reagan. The lineup concludes with Across the Pacific (1942), a spy film set in the days ahead of America’s entry into the war. The movie reunites The Maltese Falcon costars Bogart, Mary Astor and Sydney Greenstreet, and was originally helmed by Falcon director John Huston. Vincent Sherman took over in the director’s chair after Huston joined the U.S. Army Signal Corps, where he made films about the war as a uniformed captain.
