Giant
TCM, 2pm
Catch a Classic!

Best Director Oscar winner George Stevens helmed this sweeping, Best Picture Oscar-nominated 1956 saga of family conflict and social consciousness adapted from Edna Ferber’s bestseller. Simultaneously grand and epic (with a runtime of about three hours and 15 minutes) while also feeling intimate, this tale of fame and materialism among three generations of Texans is based around the discovery of oil at Spindletop and the establishment of the King Ranch of South Texas. It is led by Rock Hudson as rancher Bick Benedict, Elizabeth Taylor as his wife, Leslie, and James Dean, in his final film role, as nouveau oil baron Jett Rink. Isolating his star cast in the wilds of West Texas, Stevens brought together a volatile mix of egos, insecurities and talent. Yet the director coaxed performances out of them that made cinematic history and earned Hudson and Dean Best Actor Oscar nominations. Dean’s nomination marked the actor’s second consecutive posthumous Best Actor nod following his 1955 death at age 24 in a car accident. Dean died while Giant was late into production, so actor Nick Adams was called upon to overdub some of his lines. The film’s sizable cast also includes Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Mercedes McCambridge, Jane Withers, Robert Nichols, Chill Wills, Carroll Baker, Earl Holliman, Rod Taylor, Sal Mineo and Dennis Hopper, making his third feature film appearance.

George Gershwin 125th Birthday Celebration
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Jacob Gershwine, better known as George Gershwin, was born in New York on this day 125 years ago: Sept. 26, 1898. The famed composer and pianist died very young, passing from brain cancer at age 38 on July 11, 1937. But in his brief life he created a lasting musical legacy, especially with the way he often blended jazz with classical music, and that has been famously featured in films, including two that Gershwin himself was involved with before his death. Five movies featuring Gershwin music air tonight in commemoration of his birthdate. The lineup begins with Shall We Dance (1937), a musical comedy featuring another terrific pairing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers that also paired George Gershwin with his similarly accomplished songwriting brother, Ira, behind the scenes as composer and lyricist. The film introduced two of the Gershwins’ most famous songs: “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” and the Oscar-nominated “They Can’t Take that Away From Me.” The lineup concludes with the final movie that George Gershwin was directly involved with, another 1937 Astaire-led musical: A Damsel in Distress, which also includes George and Ira Gershwin classics like “A Foggy Day (in London Town).” George unfortunately died during this film’s production, and it was released four months later. In between these titles are Girl Crazy (1943), a musical led by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, and featuring earlier standards written by George and Ira, including “Embraceable You” and “I Got Rhythm”; An American in Paris (1951), the Best Picture Oscar-winning musical romantic comedy led by Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, and based on George Gershwin’s 1928 symphonic tone poem of the same name; and Rhapsody in Blue (1945), a biopic about George Gershwin also titled after one of his famed compositions, starring Robert Alda as the composer.

A Night at the Opera
TCM, 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Considered by many to be the Marx Brothers’ finest and funniest film, this 1935 musical comedy classic finds Groucho, Harpo and Chico (in their first movie after Zeppo left the act) bringing hilarious anarchy to the staid, snooty and often pretentious world of opera, ultimately (and literally) bringing down the house during a staging of Verdi’s Il trovatore. There is ostensibly a plot, which finds the brothers working to see that a talented tenor (Allan Jones) gets a chance to perform with the beautiful soprano (Kitty Carlisle) who he’s fallen for. It’s worth sitting through the young lovers’ scenes until the Marxes show up onscreen again with more uproarious antics, notably in Groucho’s interactions with the always-terrific and frequent Marx Brothers comedic foil Margaret Dumont, who re-teams with the boys here as a wealthy dowager, and the film’s legendary scene set in a very crowded ship’s stateroom.

The Petrified Forest
MOVIES!, 9:40pm

Leslie Howard, Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart lead this classic 1936 crime drama as, respectively, a failed British writer turned penniless drifter, a waitress and a bank robber on the lam whose paths collide when the robber, Duke Mantee, holds the others hostage at a lonely diner on the edge of Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park. Bogart’s turn as Mantee is one of the greatest villain performances in screen history. It made him a star, thanks to Howard’s insistence that the lesser-known Bogie be cast as Mantee over the studio’s preferred actor, Edward G. Robinson, who had been more established in tough-guy/gangster roles.
