This morning and afternoon’s five famous productions are led by casts featuring many notable names, starting with 1939’s The Women, director George Cukor’s comedy/drama headlined by some of the most notable actresses of the era, including Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard and Joan Fontaine. Following that, Frank Sinatra and other members of the Rat Pack, including Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Sammy Davis Jr., star in the 1960 heist film Ocean’s 11. Next, Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn and David McCallum are among the actors portraying Allied prisoners attempting The Great Escape (1963) from a German POW camp in the World War II action drama. Then, David Niven, Cantinflas and Shirley MacLaine headline the Best Picture Oscar-winning adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days (1956), which also features many notable cameo appearances by the likes of Noël Coward, John Gielgud, Charles Boyer, Gilbert Roland, Cesar Romero, Peter Lorre, Red Skelton, Marlene Dietrich and many more. Finally, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn and other notables headline director Blake Edwards’ epic slapstick comedy The Great Race (1965).

Jack and the Beanstalk (1952), Abbott and Costello’s version of the famous fairy tale about a boy who trades a cow for magic beans, begins the lineup of family-friendly adventure films. Next, a boy the size of a thumb outwits two thieves determined to make money from him in Tom Thumb (1958), followed by the biographical drama about famous German fairy tale authors The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962). Following that, a bored young boy named Milo visits The Doldrums and various other worlds through a magical tollbooth in The Phantom Tollbooth (1970). Then, in Challenge to Lassie (1949), the sixth of seven films released by MGM featuring a heroic, loving collie named Lassie, an old friend tries to convince a judge that Lassie’s life should be spared. Next, Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor star in National Velvet (1944), a family sport drama about a former jockey who helps a young girl train her wild horse for a competition, and finally, TCM’s kid classic lineup will end with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), which stars Dick Van Dyke as an eccentric inventor who turns a broken-down car into a portal for a magical adventure for his children.

The 97th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The beloved event that kicks off the holiday season returns to the streets of New York City with more floats, giant character balloons, marching bands, musical stars, a visit from Santa Claus and more. The parade has been held nearly continuously since 1924 (it was suspended between 1942-44 because of World War II), and this year marks NBC’s 71st airing of the parade as its official national broadcaster.

The Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s popular and long-running dog show returned Nov. 18-19, and it once again was taped for this two-hour Thanksgiving Day telecast on NBC, which has been broadcasting the event since 2002. John O’Hurley and David Frei are back as hosts, with Mary Carillo offering commentary. The program will encore this Saturday evening (Nov. 25).

First up: Wait Until Dark (1967), starring Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin, about a recently blinded woman being terrorized by a trio of thugs while they look for something in her apartment. In the next film, Gaslight (1944), a young woman, played by Ingrid Bergman in her first Best Actress Oscar-winning performance, moves into the house where her aunt was murdered and is slowly driven insane by her husband. Following that, Doris Day stars as an American woman in London whose sanity comes into question after she is threatened in Midnight Lace (1960). Finally, the zombie horror thriller Night of the Living Dead (1968), and the classic Vincent Price horror mystery about five people locked in a haunted house, House on Haunted Hill (1959), close out the night.
