To coincide with Donald Bogle’s new biography of Hollywood’s first African American movie goddess, Lena Horne, TCM will air some of her most noted films tonight, starting with Cabin in the Sky (1943), a fantasy comedy about a gambler (Eddie “Rochester” Anderson) who dies during a shooting but gets a second chance to reform himself and make up with his wife. Next up is Stormy Weather (1943), which follows the relationship between an aspiring dancer (Bill Robinson) and a songstress. Next is the Western drama Death of a Gunfighter (1969), about a marshal (Richard Widmark) whose town turns against him in turn-of-the-century Texas. Finishing the lineup, early into the following morning, are the musicals The Duke Is Tops (1938) and Till the Clouds Roll By (1946).

In terms of Hollywood’s most iconic characters and actors, no one is cooler than James Dean’s rebellious teen Jim Stark, which is why the first film up tonight is the Oscar-nominated classic Rebel Without a Cause (1955), costarring Natalie Wood (that both died tragically young only makes the film stand out more). The next king of cool is Marlon Brando, who stars as a leather coat-wearing motorcycle gang leader who falls for the sheriff’s daughter in The Wild One (1953). Next up is the Jean-Luc Godard-directed French film Breathless (1960), which stars Jean-Paul Belmondo as a sociopath and thief on the run from the police. After that is Steve McQueen in Bullitt (1968), which follows a San Francisco cop who becomes determined to find the criminal who killed a witness in his protection. Then, there’s the classic heist film Ocean’s Eleven (1960), which showcases the Rat Pack — Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop — in all their glory, and finally King of Cool (2021), the biography of Dean Martin.

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on American military bases at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that brought the United States into World War II. Turner Classic Movies commemorates that event with a morning and afternoon of classic films about that attack and the War in the Pacific that ensued. Several titles airing today were produced during the conflict, including Bataan (1943), led by Robert Taylor and George Murphy, which starts the lineup. Following that are Back to Bataan (1945), with John Wayne and Anthony Quinn; Air Force (1943), starring John Garfield and Gig Young; They Were Expendable (1945), directed by John Ford and featuring Wayne, Robert Montgomery and Donna Reed; Task Force (1949), led by Gary Cooper, Jane Wyatt and Walter Brennan; the Best Picture Oscar-winning From Here to Eternity (1953), headlined by Oscar nominees Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr, and Oscar winners Reed and Frank Sinatra; and December 7th (1943), a propaganda documentary film about the Pearl Harbor attack produced by the U.S. Navy and codirected by Ford and Gregg Toland. This is the original, 83-minute version of the film; a 20-minute version won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject.

To commemorate Hanukkah, TCM will celebrate “Tradition” with not one but two versions of author Sholem Aleichem’s Yiddish short stories about Tevya the Dairyman. First up is one of the most recognizable films in Jewish entertainment, the 1971 screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof, which tells the story of a Jewish peasant (Topol) with traditional values who wrestles with marrying off his choosy daughters in pre-revolutionary Russia. The film won three Oscars, including Best Original Song Score. This is followed by the Yiddish film Tevya (1939), a nonmusical film adaptation.

Meanwhile, Tiny Diamond (Kenan Thompson) comes down with a bad case of writer’s block trying to think of a special holiday rap for his dad.
