And this conviction impacted the lives of all those who passed through his orbit, leaving a complex legacy along the way. This 30 for 30 documentary chronicles White’s life in all its glory and humanity, from the highs of football stardom and stirring sermons to the lows of discrimination and heartbreak. It details the contradictory ways White embraced his teammates and tried to steer them onto a better path, even as he lashes out at the gay community and declares their actions sinful. He wreaks havoc on the field but preaches peace, and while he’s compelling in his certainty, it is when he becomes less certain that his true humanity is on display. As his football career ends, he devotes his time to a deeper spiritual journey, questioning all he’s been told and seeking a deeper understanding of his faith. Even as his life is cut tragically short by sleep apnea and a heart attack at age 43, the way he lived that life — big-hearted, flawed, searching, human — remains as crucial to his legacy as his legendary exploits on the gridiron.

In Sidney Lumet’s scathing 1976 satire of the business of television that continues to seem ever more prescient each year, over-the-hill newsman Howard Beale’s (Peter Finch) televised rant (which spawned the iconic quote, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!”) after being summarily dismissed from the anchor desk because of his age immediately transforms him into a prophet-like media figure and the focus of a new sensationalized broadcast concocted by the cynical programmers at his network. Nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, and Best Director for Lumet, the film won four: Best Actor for Finch, who became the first posthumous winner in an acting category, having passed away a few months before the ceremony; Best Actress for Faye Dunaway; Best Supporting Actress for Beatrice Straight; and Best Original Screenplay for Paddy Chayefsky. Best Actor Oscar nominee William Holden, Best Supporting Actor nominee Ned Beatty and Robert Duvall costar.

The women jet off to St. Barts for an epic adventure, returning to the infamous house on Saline Beach — aka the Pirate House — featured in Season 5 of RHONY. Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland were relative unknowns when Warner Bros. took a chance on casting them to lead this 1935 swashbuckler that finds Flynn portraying a 17th century doctor who, with other prisoners, escapes his cruel island imprisonment in the West Indies and becomes a pirate. The studio’s gamble paid off — Captain Blood became a hit and established Flynn as a dashing screen hero; he and de Havilland’s pairing was so effective and popular that they went on to costar in seven more films; and the film received two official Oscar nominations. Director Michael Curtiz was not officially nominated for an Oscar but received the second-greatest number of votes solely as a write-in candidate. Likewise, composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold — who somehow was not officially nominated by the Academy for his rousing, romantic and iconic musical score — was third on the final ballot due to a write-in campaign, as was screenwriter Casey Robinson in his category. The film did not win any Oscars but remains an action classic.

Margaret O’Brien and Mary Astor also star in this film that was nominated for four Oscars, including one for “The Trolley Song” — one of the enduring Hugh Martin/Ralph Blane musical standards introduced by Garland in the film, along with “The Boy Next Door” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” She also memorably performs the film’s title tune.
