LifetimeWith her blond locks teased to the moon, and that oh-so-familiar New York sass, Long Island medium Theresa Caputo returns to TV in a new unscripted series that catches fans up with her current life while delivering unforgettable connections to people who have lost a loved one.
Caputo was first introduced to audiences in her hit series Long Island Medium, which ran for 14 seasons. The now 56-year-old opens her life to camera crews once again, where they follow her home life (she’s a grandma now, divorced from Larry and traveling the world) to connect departed souls with loved ones still struggling with burden and grief. Here’s what she had to share about her new series Theresa Caputo: Raising Spirits (Thursdays beginning Jan. 25 at 9pm ET/PT) on Lifetime.
What made you want to return to TV?
Theresa Caputo: I never really thought in a million years that I would do another television show, but I missed it because it’s my life. For me it’s not crazy to have cameras follow me around. … Even though I’ve been on TV for 10 years, touring for over 10 years, traveling the country for over 10 years, and then have taken my live show to the U.K., I still just loving doing what I’ve always done. And that’s going to people’s homes, doing private readings, group readings, doing readings in my home, surprising people with readings. It kind of feels like life is back to normal, you might say.
What’s different or new with the Lifetime series?
My family is still a big part of the show, we just have new additions [daughter Victoria had a baby, Larry Jr. got married, Theresa is divorced from Larry Sr.]. You really get to see more of the behind the scenes of what it really is like for me. I’m literally filming in the house and suddenly, my dad just walks in. I’m like “Dad, we’re working!” It might seem crazy, odd, unbelievable to others, but to me it’s just normal.
How has your popularity and star status impacted your life now that everyone knows who you are?
Well, the only thing is if I go to Target, it’s not only taking me a half hour, I’m like there three hours. A lot of times people don’t want to bother you. They just want to say hi and maybe share a quick story on how watching the TV show or attending one of my live shows, even just reading one of my books has changed their life and helped them in the healing process and restoring their faith. What I do is so much more than just communicating with people that have died. It has reunited families back together who haven’t spoken in years and sometimes even decades. It restores our faith — whatever faith that is — maybe it is a religion or maybe it’s just faith in ourselves, faith in our family and our lives knowing that we really do deserve to embrace life and knowing that our loved ones want that for us, and that they are living this life through our eyes.
What do you want people to know about your gift?
My wish for people is not to believe in mediums or what I do for a living. It doesn’t matter to me. If someone believes in what I do, I want them to believe in an afterlife. I want them to believe and know that the things that they sense and feel that remind them of their loved ones, know that that’s their loved one’s soul. Getting their attention, reminding them that they are with you and sharing this experience with them right at that exact moment.
I often hear people who lost someone say their lights flicker unexplainably. Is that a communication from someone who passed?
There’s no right or wrong way to connect with your loved ones or how they are going to get your attention. Some souls will flicker lights, they will turn lights on and off. They will change the volume or channels will change on a television set. Their microwave will go off. Their doorbell just dings, or they’ll see actual shadows or silhouettes in a picture. I always say to people, whatever goes on around you that you think is odd or weird or grabs your attention and you think of your loved one that has died, know that that is them, know that it is their energy and their soul.
