TCM Spotlight: Columbia Pictures 100th Anniversary

As Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Wednesday night salute to Columbia Pictures, which celebrates its centennial this month, continues, we move into some of the studio’s notable productions of the 1980s and ’90s. Leading things off is Gandhi (1982), the epic biographical drama based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, played by Best Actor Oscar winner Ben Kingsley. The film won seven other Academy Awards out of its 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director (Richard Attenborough). Following that is another acclaimed drama: Philadelphia (1993), which earned Tom Hanks the first of his two consecutive Best Actor Oscars, and garnered Bruce Springsteen a Best Original Song Oscar for “Streets of Philadelphia.” The lineup continues early tomorrow with the crime thriller One False Move (1992), starring Bill Paxton, Cynda Williams and Billy Bob Thornton, who cowrote the screenplay; and The Last Emperor (1987), the epic biographical drama about the final emperor of China that won all nine of the Academy Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Picture, Director (Bernardo Bertolucci) and Adapted Screenplay (Bertolucci and Mark Peploe).

Each episode of this series follows a making of Lauren’s show, In the Know, in which the puppet conducts in-depth interviews with real-world human guests, while collaborating with a diverse crew of NPR staff (who are also puppets and nimrods).

Next, an ambitious woman (Ida Lupino) pushes her talented younger sister into becoming a Broadway star so they can leave their impoverished small town in The Hard Way (1943), a pilot (Fred Astaire) goes on leave and falls for a photographer in the musical comedy The Sky’s the Limit (1943) and Robert Alda plays composer George Gershwin in the biographical Oscar-nominated drama Rhapsody in Blue (1945). Following that is romantic comedy Janie Gets Married (1946), about a married couple with problems. Finally, a Balkan prince befriends a New York City cab driver under the guise of being a “regular guy” from Milwaukee, where the cab driver happens to be from, in Two Guys From Milwaukee (1946), and a woman who kills her husband on New Year’s Eve gets to relive the year in the crime drama Repeat Performance (1947).
