Today’s lineup includes an eclectic mix of films that have won or been nominated for Best Cinematography. First up is the 1938 romantic drama Algiers, in which a wealthy girl becomes dazzled by the Casbah and its most notorious citizen, Pepe Le Moko. Next, a ballerina and a British officer fall in love and become engaged to be married, but when he sets off to fight in World War I, their blossoming romance takes a tragic turn in Waterloo Bridge (1940), starring Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor. Following that is The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939), the biographical drama about the relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex, Robert Devereux. Next, a penniless beggar in ancient Baghdad dreams of marrying his daughter to a prince in the adventure fantasy Kismet (1944), and a jaded former jockey helps a girl prepare for a competition in the 1944 sports drama National Velvet, starring Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor. Finally, TCM closes out the day with the 1942 adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s story of a boy raised by wild animals, Jungle Book, and the adventure romance drama King Solomon’s Mines (1950), about an adventurer who leads an expedition into uncharted African territory to locate a missing explorer.

Based on the epic 1975 novel that also inspired the Richard Chamberlain miniseries in 1980, this new series takes place in feudal Japan and follows the rise of Lord Toranaga, a powerful Japanese magnate, through the eyes of an English sailor named John Blackthorne — a character modeled after William Adams, the first English navigator to reach Japan in 1600. Many of the other characters were modeled after real historical figures important to Japanese culture as well, including Lord Toranaga, played by Hiro Sanada. “It is a very universal drama,” Sanada said of the show. “Not just action, not just violence, geisha, stereotypes. Very universal, very poetic.”

During World War II, the Nazis were behind stealing thousands of pieces of artwork and millions of priceless artifacts. While some of these items have been found, many remain missing. Treasure hunter Darrell Miklos believes some of these stolen riches were loaded into specially modified U-boats that are currently lying at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea. Using new evidence and research, he sets out to find these items.
