Turner Classic Movies continues its monthlong Monday salute to the centennial of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the iconic Hollywood studio that was founded on April 17, 1924, with a 24-hour lineup of MGM classics from the late 1930s and early ’40s. The day begins with Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), the Best Picture Oscar-winning drama starring Clark Gable, Charles Laughton and Franchot Tone, all of whom earned Best Actor nominations (this three-way nomination led to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introducing the Best Supporting Actor category the following year). The schedule concludes early tomorrow morning with Cabin in the Sky (1943), a musical headlined by an all-Black cast including Ethel Waters, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson and Lena Horne. It was also the first feature film directed by Vincente Minnelli. In between these are several other popular and/or acclaimed MGM titles from this era, including Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938), one of the titles that helped turn Mickey Rooney into the top box office star of the late ’30s; Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), the drama led by Best Actor winner Robert Donat; another legendary production from Hollywood’s memorable year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz; Lassie Come Home (1943), the first entry in MGM’s seven-film franchise starring the titular collie; the iconic 1940 screwball comedy The Philadelphia Story, starring Cary Grant, Best Actress nominee Katharine Hepburn and Best Actor winner James Stewart; and more. Airing in between the movies later this evening is Part 2 of the Emmy-winning 1992 documentary MGM: When the Lion Roars, a history of the studio narrated by Patrick Stewart.

Brando somewhat parodies that performance with his role in tonight’s next film; he plays Mafia figure Carmine Sabatini in the 1990 crime comedy The Freshman, which also stars Matthew Broderick. Based on Stacy Schiff’s Pulitzer Prize winner A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, this new historical drama series starring Michael Douglas is a fascinating tell-all about a lesser-known period in Benjamin Franklin’s life that ended up being his most vital service to his country. In 1776, the charismatic 70-year-old, famous for his electrical experiments, took on a secret mission to France. His job: convince an absolute monarchy to support and fund the American Revolution. His eight-year Gallic adventure gets underway with an undercover arrival in Paris facilitated by his closest confidant, the serious Dr. Edward Bancroft (Daniel Mays). Franklin is also accompanied by his teen grandson, Temple (A Quiet Place’s Noah Jupe). “At the center, it’s a grandfather-grandson story,” says Emmy-winning director and executive producer Tim Van Patten. “Franklin, like any parent who has kids coming of age, must guide Temple through that tumultuous time, but in the most decadent place in the world.”

The late Norman Lear, who helped develop the original series, was also involved with this project before his passing at age 101 last December (the series’ eighth episode will feature a cameo from Lear, his final role). This reboot centers on the fourth generation of the Evans family living in Apartment 17C of a Chicago housing project, dealing with modern-day issues and retaining the feel of the original. The voice cast includes J.B. Smoove, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jay Pharoah, Marsai Martin and Slink Johnson.

Stanley Donen 100th Birthday Tribute

Legendary director and choreographer Stanley Donen would have turned 100 today (he was born April 13, 1924, in Columbia, South Carolina; he died Feb. 21, 2019, in New York City at age 94). To celebrate his film legacy, TCM is airing four of his classics. Up first, airing in the network’s usual Musical Matinee block, is Singin’ in the Rain, the iconic 1952 musical that Donen choreographed and codirected with star Gene Kelly. Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds and Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Jean Hagen costar. After that is the Best Picture-nominated 1954 musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, led by Howard Keel and Jane Powell. Next is the musical comedy Royal Wedding (1951), featuring Fred Astaire, Powell and Peter Lawford, and the Oscar-nominated song “Too Late Now.” The Donen tribute concludes with the beloved 1958 romantic comedy Indiscreet, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.
