Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Wednesday salute to legendary actor Marlon Brando continues with four films this evening. The lineup begins with the iconic 1972 classic The Godfather, featuring Brando as Vito Corleone, a role that won him another Best Actor Oscar. Brando somewhat parodies that performance with his role in tonight’s next film; he plays Mafia figure Carmine Sabatini in the 1990 crime comedy The Freshman, which also stars Matthew Broderick. After that is the TCM premiere of director Bernardo Bertolucci’s infamous erotic drama Last Tango in Paris (1972), featuring Brando in yet another Best Actor-nominated performance, alongside Maria Schneider. The lineup concludes early tomorrow with a movie featuring one of Brando’s strangest characters: frontier “regulator” Robert E. Lee Clayton in The Missouri Breaks (1976), director Arthur Penn’s Western that also stars Jack Nicholson, Randy Quaid and Kathleen Lloyd.

Tonight’s lineup begins with My Favorite Year (1982), introduced by Ben Mankiewicz with Darcy Hettrich, TCM’s vice president of talent from 1993-2017. Next is That’s Entertainment! (1974), with Mankiewicz and Dennis Millay, senior director of programming for TCM from 1993-2017. Based on Stacy Schiff’s Pulitzer Prize winner A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, this new historical drama series starring Michael Douglas is a fascinating tell-all about a lesser-known period in Benjamin Franklin’s life that ended up being his most vital service to his country. In 1776, the charismatic 70-year-old, famous for his electrical experiments, took on a secret mission to France. His job: convince an absolute monarchy to support and fund the American Revolution. His eight-year Gallic adventure gets underway with an undercover arrival in Paris facilitated by his closest confidant, the serious Dr. Edward Bancroft (Daniel Mays). Franklin is also accompanied by his teen grandson, Temple (A Quiet Place’s Noah Jupe). “At the center, it’s a grandfather-grandson story,” says Emmy-winning director and executive producer Tim Van Patten. “Franklin, like any parent who has kids coming of age, must guide Temple through that tumultuous time, but in the most decadent place in the world.”

Parineeti Chopra costars as Amarjot, Chamkila’s wife and singing partner.

This animated “spiritual sequel” to the classic 1974-79 live-action sitcom Good Times comes from executive producers Stephen Curry and Seth MacFarlane. The late Norman Lear, who helped develop the original series, was also involved with this project before his passing at age 101 last December (the series’ eighth episode will feature a cameo from Lear, his final role). This reboot centers on the fourth generation of the Evans family living in Apartment 17C of a Chicago housing project, dealing with modern-day issues and retaining the feel of the original. The voice cast includes J.B. Smoove, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jay Pharoah, Marsai Martin and Slink Johnson.

Stanley Donen 100th Birthday Tribute

Legendary director and choreographer Stanley Donen would have turned 100 today (he was born April 13, 1924, in Columbia, South Carolina; he died Feb. 21, 2019, in New York City at age 94). To celebrate his film legacy, TCM is airing four of his classics. Up first, airing in the network’s usual Musical Matinee block, is Singin’ in the Rain, the iconic 1952 musical that Donen choreographed and codirected with star Gene Kelly. Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds and Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Jean Hagen costar. After that is the Best Picture-nominated 1954 musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, led by Howard Keel and Jane Powell. Next is the musical comedy Royal Wedding (1951), featuring Fred Astaire, Powell and Peter Lawford, and the Oscar-nominated song “Too Late Now.” The Donen tribute concludes with the beloved 1958 romantic comedy Indiscreet, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.
