Catch a Classic!
Paul Newman leads this hilarious 1977 cult classic, which is one of the funniest sports comedies ever made and a rare film of any genre set in the world of ice hockey. The story surrounds a struggling minor league hockey team in a declining factory town that finds success and popularity when it adds outrageously violent goonery to its play. Much of that comes courtesy of the Hansons, three black-rimmed-glasses-wearing brothers brought on as “enforcers” and portrayed by former real-life hockey players David Hanson, and Steve and Jeff Carlson. Nancy Dowd wrote the screenplay, based on her brother Ned’s hockey-playing experiences, and the film was directed by George Roy Hill, who had previously directed Newman in the classics Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Sting (1973).

Around the World in 80 Days
TCM, 4:45pm
Catch a Classic!
Back in the era when Hollywood regularly produced all-star comedies on an often epic scale, few of those movies came bigger than this 1956 Best Picture Oscar-winning adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel about English gentleman Phileas Fogg (David Niven), who wagers that he can circumnavigate the globe in a mere 80 days. Given that this story takes place in 1872, Fogg has set himself up for a herculean challenge, which he gladly takes, and he sets off on his trek with his trusty valet (portrayed by Cantinflas) on various modes of 19th century transport, most famously a gas balloon. The incredibly fun film is truly epic, spanning the globe and running around three hours. But things move along quickly thanks to the crisp, Oscar-nominated direction by Michael Anderson; the colorful, Oscar-winning cinematography by Lionel Lindon; Victor Young’s Oscar-winning musical score (Young also composed the famous song “Around the World” for the film, but it somehow did not get an Oscar nod); and the delightful cast, which also includes Robert Newton and Shirley MacLaine in just her third feature film.

TCM Spotlight: The Hays Gaze (90th Anniversary of the Hays Code)
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Monday night remembrance of the Motion Picture Production Code (aka the Hays Code) that was instituted in Hollywood between 1934 and 1968 continues with more double features of various themes considered to be controversial during the era, contrasting one made before enforcement of the Code with another made when the Code was more fully in effect. The first pairing looks at two films about women con artists: the pre-Code romantic comedy Trouble in Paradise (1932), directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Miriam Hopkins, Kay Francis and Herbert Marshall, followed by writer/director Preston Sturges’ screwball comedy The Lady Eve (1941), led by Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. After that are a couple of films dealing with female social climbers who go to great lengths to get ahead: Red-Headed Woman (1932), a pre-Code romantic comedy written by Anita Loos and starring Jean Harlow as a woman who uses sex to rise in society, breaks up a marriage and even attempts to kill a guy, followed by director King Vidor’s drama Stella Dallas (1937), led by Best Actress Oscar nominee Stanwyck in the title role alongside Best Supporting Actress nominee Anne Shirley. Two films dealing with women and divorce conclude things early tomorrow: the Best Picture-nominated pre-Code drama The Divorcee (1930), starring Best Actress winner Norma Shearer, and the Best Picture-nominated Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers musical The Gay Divorcee (1934), made right around the time when the Hays Code was more enforced and thus featuring some elements that caused concern for censors.

Roger Corman — Part 3 (Produced By)
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies concludes its three-week celebration of prolific and influential filmmaker Roger Corman, who passed away May 9 at age 98, with several more of the low-budget B-movie classics that Corman was behind. The five titles were produced by Corman and were each helmed by future big-name directors, just a handful of the now-major Hollywood names who got their starts working on Corman movies. Up first is Boxcar Bertha (1972), a Depression-set crime drama that was Martin Scorsese’s second directorial feature. Barbara Hershey stars as the title character, alongside David Carradine. Next is Targets (1968), which marked Peter Bogdanovich’s theatrical directorial debut. Bogdanovich also wrote the screenplay for this crime thriller, which stars Tim O’Kelly and horror icon Boris Karloff. After that is Francis Ford Coppola’s feature directorial debut: the black-and-white slasher horror film Dementia 13 (1963), which Coppola also wrote. As the lineup enters late-night/early tomorrow morning, it features a couple of the more exploitative and raunchy and/or violent, yet still fun, Corman productions. There is 1974’s Caged Heat, a women-in-prison film written and helmed by Jonathan Demme in his directorial debut. The lineup concludes with Piranha (1978), directed and co-edited by Joe Dante. A cut above the numerous Jaws-like imitators that followed that 1975 blockbuster, the film, with its screenplay by John Sayles, features some tongue-in-cheek humor alongside its killer-fish violence.
