Comet, beginning at 7pm
Comet’s second annual four-night event explores the world of artificial intelligence with some of the biggest sci-fi features of all time. The celebration begins this evening with back-to-back 40th anniversary airings of James Cameron’s 1984 classic The Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. Comet Fest continues through Saturday, Aug. 3, and will also feature Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001), and the original Westworld (1973) and its sequel, Futureworld (1976).

Enjoy some of Frank Sinatra’s dramatic acting roles from the 1960s, beginning with his terrific performance in director John Frankenheimer’s classic political thriller The Manchurian Candidate (1962). The rest of the cast is equally good, including Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh and Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Angela Lansbury in a wonderfully chilling and sinister performance. Following that, Sinatra is the “Ryan” of the title in the World War II adventure flick Von Ryan’s Express (1965), also starring Trevor Howard. Then, Sinatra appears in the first of his two performances as the Miami private investigator of the title in Tony Rome (1967), a noirish mystery costarring Jill St. John, Sue Lyon and Gena Rowlands. The lineup of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ acting appearances concludes with another adventure film, The Devil at 4 O’Clock (1961), which also features Spencer Tracy and Kerwin Mathews.

Renowned as both a star and a filmmaker, Ida Lupino gets a 13-film Summer Under the Stars lineup on Turner Classic Movies today, highlighted by two 1940 films noir directed by Raoul Walsh in which Lupino starred opposite Humphrey Bogart — the taut jewel heist drama High Sierra and They Drive by Night, also featuring George Raft and Ann Sheridan. Several other cool noirs in which Lupino starred can also be enjoyed today, including Out of the Fog (1941), costarring John Garfield; The Man I Love (1947), directed by Walsh; On Dangerous Ground (1951), also with Robert Ryan; and director Fritz Lang’s While the City Sleeps (1956).

It must be hard to program just a day’s worth of movies starring Marion Robert Morrison, better known as John Wayne; given the many classics he made over his long career, some great titles will have to be left off. But TCM has scheduled an excellent Summer Under the Stars lineup devoted to the Duke today. It’s a 14-film mix of his earlier and later works, encompassing titles like Ride Him, Cowboy (1932), Stagecoach (1939), Angel and the Badman (1947), Fort Apache (1948), Flying Leathernecks (1951), Legend of the Lost (1957), McLintock! (1963), The Train Robbers (1973) and more.
