Famed actor/filmmaker/activist Raiford Chatman “Ossie” Davis, best known simply as Ossie Davis, is welcomed to TCM’s Summer Under the Stars for the first time with 12 titles, two of which are network premieres: the 1971 TV movie The Sheriff, which also features Davis’ longtime wife and frequent costar, Ruby Dee, and the biographical drama Baadasssss! (2003), one of his final films. Other highlights today include the Western The Scalphunters (1968), which earned Davis a Golden Globe nod for Best Supporting Actor; two of the Spike Lee-directed films in which he appeared, Do the Right Thing (1989), also with Dee, and Get on the Bus (1996); the ’70s action/crime comedies Let’s Do It Again (1975) and Hot Stuff (1979); the drama Harry & Son (1984), starring and directed by Paul Newman; and more.

Iconic German actress/singer Marlene Dietrich gets the Summer Under the Stars treatment today with a 12-film lineup. Included are the first two sound movies she made following her several-year career during the silent era, both from 1930 and both directed by Josef von Sternberg: the German musical comedy/drama The Blue Angel, which launched Dietrich’s international fame, and the American romantic drama Morocco, which earned the star a Best Actress Oscar nomination alongside Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou. Also featured today are the von Sternberg-directed dramas Shanghai Express (1932) and Blonde Venus (1932), which costars Herbert Marshall and Cary Grant; the romantic comedy Angel (1937), directed by Ernst Lubitsch; the Hitchcock thriller Stage Fright (1950); director Fritz Lang’s intriguing Western Rancho Notorious (1952); and more.

2024 Paralympic Games
USA Network, beginning at 1pm Live; also streams on Peacock

The Paralympic Games begin today in Paris, and USA Network kicks things off with over four hours of live coverage of the opening ceremony. The network picks up again with 12 hours of coverage beginning early in the morning tomorrow and Friday. NBC will feature recorded events in primetime on Aug. 30 and Sept. 1, and during the day on Sept. 1. Peacock will stream more than 1,500 hours of live coverage across all 22 Paralympic sports during the games and will also feature a Gold Zone channel similar to the one that was popular during the Olympics, hosted by Carolyn Manno for five hours during the day. CNBC will also feature coverage at various times, hosted by five-time Paralympic medal-winning swimmer Mallory Weggemann, the first Paralympian to host Olympic coverage for an NBCU net.

MasterChef: Generations

The culinary competition series continues with two new episodes tonight. In “Tag Team,” the 12 remaining chefs work in pairs and rotate cooking duties during the tag team challenge. In “Storm’s a Brewin’,” contestants are given only 45 minutes to prepare a restaurant-quality dish that features coffee.

Killer Lies: Chasing a True Crime Con Man

The popular Terminator universe is the setting for this anime series that promises to center on characters not yet met in previous movies or series. It follows a soldier sent back from 2022 to 1997 on a mission to protect a scientist trying to launch a new AI system designed to compete against Skynet before the latter becomes self-aware and launches its attack against humanity. As the scientist navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting Terminator assassin from the future (voiced by Timothy Olyphant).

Actress/dancer/singer Virginia Katherine McMath, better known as Ginger Rogers, will be celebrated on today’s Summer Under the Stars lineup with 13 of her films. As you would expect, the lineup features several of her legendary collaborations with dance partner Fred Astaire: The Gay Divorcee (1934), Top Hat (1935), Swing Time (1936) and Shall We Dance (1937). There are also a number of nonmusical features that Rogers made, including romantic comedies like Rafter Romance (1933) and The Major and the Minor (1942), which costars Ray Milland; the comedy/drama Week-End at the Waldorf (1945), also with Lana Turner; the film noir thriller Storm Warning (1950), costarring Ronald Reagan and Doris Day; and more.

The 2024 installment of Turner Classic Movies’ Summer Under the Stars event concludes today with a 12-film salute to actor Bernard Schwartz, better known by his professional name of Tony Curtis. Movies from a wide variety of genres are featured, demonstrating Curtis’ acting range. A primetime centerpiece of the lineup is Some Like It Hot (1959), Best Director nominee Billy Wilder’s classic comedy led by Curtis, Marilyn Monroe and Best Actor nominee Jack Lemmon. Following that is the equally famous 1958 Best Picture-nominated drama The Defiant Ones, which earned Curtis a Best Actor nod of his own, alongside fellow Best Actor nominee Sidney Poitier. Later in the evening, Curtis gives a chilling performance as real-life murderer Albert DeSalvo in the 1968 true-crime drama The Boston Strangler. Other highlights today include the romantic comedy Sex and the Single Girl (1964), costarring Natalie Wood; the film noir drama Sweet Smell of Success (1957), also led by Burt Lancaster; director Blake Edwards’ epic slapstick comedy The Great Race (1965), which re-teams Curtis with Lemmon and Wood; and more.
