Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt star as Fred C. Dobbs and Bob Curtin, down-on-their-luck American vagrants in 1925 Mexico who team up with a grizzled prospector named Howard (Huston’s father Walter, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) in search of gold in the central Mexican wilds. Through enormous difficulties, they eventually succeed in finding gold, but bandits (who famously “ain’t got no badges”), the elements and, most especially, greed threaten to turn their success into disaster. Bruce Bennett, Barton MacLane and Alfonso Bedoya also star in this legendary production that shot on location south of the border and cost a then-unheard-of $3 million to make.

This atmospheric and influential 1944 mystery was among the earliest film noir titles, and the first film to feature Raymond Chandler’s legendary private eye Philip Marlowe. While the character of Marlowe is most associated with Humphrey Bogart’s portrayal a few years later in The Big Sleep, Dick Powell gives a charismatic, cast-against-type, hard-boiled and gritty performance as the detective in this adaptation of Chandler’s novel Farewell, My Lovely (the title under which the film was released in the U.K.), and the film is regarded as one of the better Chandler adaptations. Costarring with Powell are Claire Trevor, Anne Shirley and Otto Kruger, who offers his usual terrific brand of charismatic villainy.

Naturally, you would expect a network like Turner Classic Movies to get involved with a celebration like this, and tonight they are featuring several notable titles (beyond what they usually have on their weekly Silent Sunday Nights programming block). This evening’s four films are all from 1924 and celebrating their 100th anniversaries this year. Up first is director Erich von Stroheim’s epic and influential drama Greed, considered by many as not only one of the greatest silent movies, but one of the finest overall. Next is the TCM premiere of The Enchanted Cottage, the first screen adaptation of Arthur Wing Pinero’s 1923 play. The lineup concludes late night/early tomorrow with Goesta Berling’s Saga, a Swedish romantic drama notable for featuring Greta Garbo’s breakthrough performance in her home country, and Hot Water, one of the legendary silent comedies starring Harold Lloyd.

Legendary actress Deborah Jane Trimmer — better known as Deborah Kerr — would have turned 103 today (she was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Glasgow, Scotland; she died in Suffolk, England, on Oct. 16, 2007, at age 86). While somehow never winning any of her six Best Actress Oscar nominations (and, frankly, she should have been nominated for at least a few more), Kerr remains an icon of old Hollywood, and Turner Classic Movies celebrates the birthday girl today with seven of her films, including several less-obvious ones. The lineup features Please Believe Me (1950), a romantic comedy costarring Robert Walker; If Winter Comes (1947), a drama also featuring Walter Pidgeon, Angela Lansbury and Janet Leigh in her second film; Young Bess (1953), a historical drama featuring Kerr as Catherine Parr alongside Jean Simmons as Elizabeth I and Charles Laughton as Henry VIII; Edward, My Son (1949), the Spencer Tracy-led British drama that earned Kerr her first Best Actress Oscar nomination, along with a Golden Globe nod; Count Your Blessings (1959), a romantic comedy also featuring Maurice Chevalier; Vacation From Marriage (1945, aka Perfect Strangers), a British drama from director Alexander Korda that costars Robert Donat; and Quo Vadis (1951), the Best Picture-nominated religious epic costarring Best Supporting Actor nominees Peter Ustinov and Leo Genn.

The first four Wednesdays of the month will feature nighttime lineups of Lugosi favorites divided by themes. Tonight’s initial theme is “Universal Horror Star,” which kicks off with his legendary title role in the film that made him a star: 1931’s Dracula. Following that are other frightening classics with Lugosi in lead or supporting roles, mostly from Universal: Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), inspired by the Edgar Allan Poe short story; Island of Lost Souls (1932, from Paramount), based on H.G. Wells’ novel The Island of Doctor Moreau; The Black Cat (1934), the first of eight big-screen pairings between the actor and fellow scary movie master Boris Karloff; and The Wolf Man (1941), led by Lon Chaney Jr. and also featuring Claude Rains.

Legend has it that the crook vowed to haunt anyone who dared steal his prized possessions.

Tonight’s first theme is “Bette & Joan” and consists of two films: Sudden Fear (1952), a film noir thriller led by Joan Crawford and Jack Palance, and In This Our Life (1942), directed by John Huston and starring Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland, the third of five films in which the actresses costarred. Following these, airing in late night, are four more outright scary movies airing under the theme of “Horror Classics”: House of Wax (1953), starring Vincent Price; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), probably the most renowned adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Gothic horror novel, featuring Best Actor Oscar winner Fredric March in the dual title roles (March tied with Wallace Beery, who was also named Best Actor for The Champ); Mad Love (1935), starring Peter Lorre and Colin Clive, one of the handful of films directed by Karl Freund, the noted cinematographer for such classics as Metropolis (1927) and Dracula (1931); and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), based on Oscar Wilde’s novel and led by George Sanders, Hurd Hatfield, Donna Reed and Angela Lansbury, who earned her second consecutive Best Supporting Actress nomination in just her third feature film.

Rod Serling’s legendary sci-fi/fantasy anthology series The Twilight Zone premiered Oct. 2, 1959, on CBS. To celebrate the show’s 65th anniversary, Syfy is airing a marathon of 65 episodes beginning today and continuing into late-night tomorrow. The marathon features a mix of the standard half-hour episodes along with some of the hourlong ones that were produced, and it also includes the series’ premiere episode, Serling’s “Where Is Everybody?”

To clear his family’s name, he revives the monster (Boris Karloff, reprising his legendary role) and tries to rehabilitate him. Bela Lugosi also stars. Following that is the 1957 sci-fi creature feature The Monster That Challenged the World, in which a horde of prehistoric mollusk monsters enters the canal system of California’s Imperial Valley and terrorizes the populace.
