Sundays With Carol Burnett will pair a classic film with a parody of it that was done on Burnett’s famous self-titled sketch comedy series. Up first, one of the most legendary films in Hollywood history, Gone With the Wind (1939), is matched up with one of The Carol Burnett Show’s most legendary sketches, “Went With the Wind!” Originally airing Nov. 13, 1976, during the series’ 10th season, the sketch features Burnett as “Starlett O’Hara” (wearing that famous curtain dress, complete with rod) and Harvey Korman as “Captain Ratt Butler,” among others, with the cast barely able to maintain straight faces and keep from bursting out laughing as they skewer GWTW.

It’s fitting that Turner Classic Movies will be celebrating an actor born with the name Joseph Yule Jr. during Christmastime. Of course, the millions who have been entertained by the incredible body of work that this man put out during his close to 90-year career know him a lot better by his professional name of Mickey Rooney. Each Thursday this month, the beloved star will be celebrated with daylong marathons of his memorable films, and that still won’t even begin to come close to showing the nearly 300 movies in which he appeared. Today’s lineup runs 25 hours and features several films that Rooney made in the 1930s, starting with one of his earliest roles, an uncredited bit part in the gangster drama The Beast of the City (1932) when he was just 12 years old. Several other earlier works take up the first part of the day, then later on come some of Rooney’s more significant roles in more major titles that helped him along on his road to stardom, including the sports drama Down the Stretch (1936); the Shakespeare adaptation A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935), where he played Puck; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1939), with Rooney as the title character; the comedy/drama Ah, Wilderness! (1935); and plenty more.

During their quest to obtain the liquid gold and remain under the radar, things, of course, get very sticky.
