The 2024 documentary Becoming Hitchcock — The Legacy of Blackmail, directed by Laurent Bouzereau and narrated by film critic/historian Elvis Mitchell, makes its TCM premiere tonight, kicking off an evening of films related to its theme, which reflects on the birth of the “Hitchcock Touch” and the development of the director’s signature style through the making of one of his benchmark movies, Blackmail (1929). That silent thriller follows the 72-minute documentary; after that is an encore presentation of Becoming Hitchcock, followed by the sound version of Blackmail that was also produced. The evening ends with two more of Hitch’s earlier British films: the thriller Murder! (1930) and the drama The Skin Game (1931). This examination of how Hitchcock developed what would become his familiar style by looking at his earlier films will continue next Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Raoul Walsh directed this 1941 film noir with a screenplay cowritten by John Huston, who would reteam with star Humphrey Bogart later that year on another noir classic, The Maltese Falcon. Here, Bogie plays a criminal, Roy Earle, who is hired by his old boss to help a group of less experienced crooks plan and carry out the robbery of a California resort. Costarring Ida Lupino, the film is also enhanced by location shooting in the titular Sierras and surrounding areas, including Death Valley and Mount Whitney, the setting for a famous car chase.
