The latest TV take on the world’s most famous fictional detective puts the spotlight on the sidekick. Morris Chestnut plays Dr. John Watson, close chum of Sherlock Holmes, in this medical mystery series set in present-day Pittsburgh.

In Watson (CBS Sundays beginning Jan. 26 at 10pm ET/PT), the great sleuth Holmes is missing and presumed dead, having gone over Reichenbach Falls with his archnemesis Moriarty. Watson is recovering from serious head trauma after taking the plunge himself. Holmes had a huge nest egg, and he posthumously founds the Holmes Clinic of Diagnostic Medicine and puts Watson in charge.

Watson and his team of experts must sort out the hard facts from the red herrings to treat patients suffering from stranger-than-fiction afflictions. “The one thing that Craig Sweeny, our creator and showrunner, is really excited about is the fact that the science in our show is very accurate,” Chestnut says. Google “uncombable hair syndrome” and see for yourself.

Fortunately, Watson offers more than Weird Disease of the Week. There’s a lot of character-driven drama among the physicians that Watson has assembled on his team. “He’s fascinated by certain aspects of their lives and certain aspects of them as human beings,” Chestnut says. One of them, neurologist Ingrid Derian (Eve Harlow), has a darkness about her that reminds Watson of Holmes. And two of them, identical twins Stephens and Adam Croft, are played by one actor, Peter Mark Kendall. “We knew it was ambitious, but I think that hopefully the audience appreciates it on a number of levels,” Chestnut says. “I think he’s incredible playing twin brothers.”
