Little Caesar
MOVIES!, 8pm
Catch a Classic!

“This is Rico speaking! R-I-C-O! Rico! Little Caesar, that’s who!” Edward G. Robinson’s title character bellows into the phone near the end of this seminal 1931 gangster drama, one of the earliest of that genre. Things don’t end too well for Rico after that, but for the actor, Hollywood got the message loud and clear: The 37-year-old Robinson, not gifted with matinee-idol looks, powerfully introduced himself as a first-class star of the silver screen with his mesmerizing performance here. Moviegoers would also begin to hail the hard-hitting social consciousness dramas like this one that would become the Depression-era mainstay of Warner Bros. The film, based on the novel by William R. Burnett (and nominated for an Oscar for its screenplay adaptation) is the tale of pugnacious Caesar Enrico “Rico” Bandello, a hoodlum with a Chicago-sized chip on his shoulder, few attachments, fewer friends and no sense of underworld diplomacy as he rises to the upper echelons of organized crime. And Robinson — in real life a genteel art collector who disdained guns (while filming the movie, his eyelids were taped to keep them from blinking when he fired a pistol) — instantly became forever associated with the screen’s archetypal gangster, with his attitude and dialect becoming a staple among impressionists for decades to come.

Starring Ann Miller
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!

Actress/dancer/singer Johnnie Lucille Collier, better known as Ann Miller, is celebrated today with a lineup of several of the classic films, mostly musicals, in which she made memorable appearances. Leading things off is Easter Parade (1948), which also stars Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Peter Lawford. The film features Miller dancing with Astaire as he sings “It Only Happens When I Dance With You,” and later dancing to the song as an instrumental, and she also dances solo to “Shakin’ the Blues Away.” Next is On the Town (1949), codirected by star Gene Kelly (who also choreographed) and Stanley Donen, and also featuring Frank Sinatra and Betty Garrett. Among the musical numbers featuring Miller here are “Prehistoric Man,” “On the Town” and “You Can Count on Me.” Following that is Two Tickets to Broadway (1951), also featuring Tony Martin and Janet Leigh, and with Miller featured in the Busby Berkeley-choreographed musical number for “The Worry Bird,” among others. Berkeley also choreographed several numbers in the next film, Small Town Girl (1953), which costars Jane Powell and Farley Granger. Miller is featured in the numbers for “I’ve Gotta Hear That Beat” and “My Gaucho.” Kiss Me Kate (1953) is next, featuring Miller alongside Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel in a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. She prominently sings and dances in musical numbers including “Too Darn Hot,” “Always True to You in My Fashion,” “From This Moment On” and “Why Can’t You Behave?” Miller appears again with Powell and Martin, along with Debbie Reynolds and Walter Pidgeon, in the next film, Hit the Deck (1955), which features Miller in numbers for “Keeping Myself for You” and “Lady From the Bayou.” Today’s lineup concludes with Miller’s final feature film from during her 1950s heyday, and her third-to-last big-screen movie overall, The Great American Pastime (1956). This baseball-themed film is not a musical, but a straight-up comedy that gives Miller a chance to shine in that genre alongside Tom Ewell, Anne Francis and Dean Jones.
