Harry Belafonte Double Feature
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Enjoy two of the classic films led by legendary star Harry Belafonte tonight. The first title is the intriguing postapocalyptic sci-fi drama The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959). Belafonte plays a miner who resurfaces after a cave-in to discover humanity has been mostly wiped out in a nuclear holocaust. He finds two other survivors, played by Mel Ferrer and Inger Stevens, and these three make up the entirety of the cast as all-too-common social and racial tensions begin to impact and strain the characters even in this strange new world. Second on tonight’s double bill is the drama Bright Road (1953, pictured above), which marked Belafonte’s feature film debut. Set in a school and featuring a nearly all-Black cast, the film is led by Dorothy Dandridge as an idealistic first-year elementary school teacher trying to reach a problem student. Belafonte plays the school’s principal, a role that also gives him the chance to show off his singing talent as he performs “Suzanne (Every Night When the Sun Goes Down).”

Terrifically played by Cary Grant in a way that never entirely lets you know his true motivations, and with a tinge of darkness beneath the usual Grant suavity, Johnnie turns out to be a penniless grifter, and Lina soon begins to suspect that he is planning to murder her for her life insurance. Nigel Bruce, Cedric Hardwicke and May Whitty costar in the film, which also boasts an Oscar-nominated score by Franz Waxman.

No, tonight’s Turner Classic Movies’ themed “Slap Shots” lineup is not made up of films about ice hockey, but rather movies that feature great slap scenes. Up first is Vivacious Lady (1938). A much more dramatic and very satisfying slap takes place in the next film, In the Heat of the Night (1967). As Black police detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) questions wealthy, racist plantation owner Eric Endicott (Larry Gates), Endicott slaps Tibbs — who promptly slaps him right back, to the stunned disbelief of not only Endicott, but also the white policemen with Tibbs. Next, in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), one of the violent ways in which former vaudeville child star “Baby Jane” Hudson (Best Actress Oscar nominee Bette Davis) torments and abuses her paraplegic sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) is by slapping the wheelchair-bound woman in the face. Joan Collins, whose later character on the Dynasty TV series would be involved in a number of face-slapping moments, is on the receiving end of one doled out by June Allyson in the next film, The Opposite Sex (1956), a musical remake of 1939’s The Women.
