TCM Birthday Tribute: Flora Robson
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!

English actress Flora Robson was born on this day 123 years ago (March 28, 1902); she passed away in her home country on July 7, 1984, at age 82. Turner Classic Movies commemorates her life and career on her special day with seven of her notable films. Leading off the lineup is one of her earlier films, The Rise of Catherine the Great (1934), in which she portrays Russian Empress Elizabeth alongside Elisabeth Bergner as the title ruler. Robson plays another famous monarch, Queen Elizabeth, in the next film, The Sea Hawk (1940), one of the classic swashbucklers led by Errol Flynn. Following that is the romantic Western drama Saratoga Trunk (1945), starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. Robson earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her role as a maid, which she unfortunately played in blackface, which had been considered inappropriate and offensive even by this time. Robson has a supporting role in another historical drama that airs next: Caesar and Cleopatra (1945), led by Claude Rains and Vivien Leigh as the title figures. Following that is the 1945 British drama Great Day, in which Robson is co-lead with Eric Portman. The 1947 British psychological drama Black Narcissus follows, featuring Robson alongside Deborah Kerr, Sabu and Jean Simmons. The lineup concludes with Robson’s supporting performance in Murder at the Gallop (1963), based on Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple mystery novel After the Funeral and one of four film adaptations featuring Margaret Rutherford as Marple.
