With unfinished business between the former childhood sweethearts, plus the presence of Nevile’s new wife, Kay (Mimi Keene), and a number of other interesting characters, tensions run high and soon lead to murder. Turner Classic Movies remembers one of Hollywood’s greatest male stars of all time today with six of his films: Invisible Stripes (1939), a crime drama that featured Holden in his second credited film role (on the movie’s poster, he was third billed, below stars George Raft and Jane Bryan, and his name was more prominently above that of costar Humphrey Bogart); Toward the Unknown (1956), an aviation drama directed by Mervyn LeRoy and costarring Lloyd Nolan, Virginia Leith and James Garner in his film debut; Escape From Fort Bravo (1953), a Civil War-set Western from director John Sturges that also features Eleanor Parker and John Forsythe; Force of Arms (1951), a romantic drama set in World War II Italy that costars Nancy Olson; Our Town (1940), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s famous play, with Best Actress nominee Martha Scott starring alongside Holden; and director Robert Wise’s drama Executive Suite (1954), which also stars June Allyson, Barbara Stanwyck, Fredric March and Best Supporting Actress nominee Nina Foch.

Mary Magdalene, a Galilean woman, was suffering great spiritual affliction when she met a remarkable healer – Jesus of Nazareth. After Jesus cures her of seven demons, Mary becomes one of Christ’s closest followers. But her most important role is as the witness to Jesus’ Resurrection, after which she is tasked with being an important herald of early Christianity.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Friday night celebration of films that are based on works of pulp fiction (or are just pulpy in their own right) continues this evening with a lineup of titles about villains and detectives. Up first is Arsène Lupin (1932), with John Barrymore portraying the titular gentleman thief created by Maurice Leblanc in early 20th century short stories. The evening concludes with that character, this time portrayed by Melvyn Douglas, in Arsène Lupin Returns (1938). “Thrill Crazy … Kill Crazy … Gun Crazy” reads the poster for this 1950 film noir led by John Dall and Peggy Cummins as a husband and wife who are, indeed, at least as crazy for their guns as they are for each other while embarking on a crime spree. The screenplay was written by Dalton Trumbo (who was credited as “Millard Kaufman” due to his blacklisting at the time) and MacKinlay Kantor, based on Kantor’s 1940 short story. Somewhat of a pulpy cult favorite, Gun Crazy also has “respectability” — it’s been included in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”
