Gun Crazy

“Thrill Crazy … Kill Crazy … Gun Crazy” reads the poster for this 1950 film noir led by John Dall and Peggy Cummins as a husband and wife who are, indeed, at least as crazy for their guns as they are for each other while embarking on a crime spree. The screenplay was written by Dalton Trumbo (who was credited as “Millard Kaufman” due to his blacklisting at the time) and MacKinlay Kantor, based on Kantor’s 1940 short story. Somewhat of a pulpy cult favorite, Gun Crazy also has “respectability” — it’s been included in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

Easter Movies
TCM, beginning at 6am
MOVIES!, beginning at 12:25pm
Catch a Classic!
Happy Easter! You can celebrate the holiday today with films of the sacred and the secular variety on TCM and MOVIES! (hope you like Ben-Hur!).
Things begin early on TCM with Best Director Oscar winner William Wyler’s Best Picture-winning religious epic Ben-Hur (1959), led by Best Actor winner Charlton Heston in the title role and boasting an iconic chariot race that ranks as one of the greatest action sequences ever filmed. Altogether, the movie won a whopping 11 of the 12 Oscars for which it was nominated, a feat only matched by Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Following Ben-Hur is a re-airing of the previous night’s Noir Alley title (1949’s The Set-Up). TCM’s Easter-themed movie lineup then continues with a few more religious/historical epics: The Silver Chalice (1954), led by Virginia Mayo and Paul Newman in his film debut; Barabbas (1961), starring Anthony Quinn in the title role; and King of Kings (1961), which retells the life of Jesus Christ (portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter). After this, moving into primetime, the lineup features Easter Parade (1948), starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, accompanied by classic tunes like the title song, “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” and “We’re a Couple of Swells.” Next is Harvey (1950), the charming comedy led by Best Actor nominee James Stewart, which seems to be in an Easter movie lineup because it has a giant rabbit in it (or does it?). Late night, the lineup concludes with the 1925 silent epic Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.
MOVIES! starts its lineup with the 1959 Ben-Hur. That is followed by The Robe (1953), the Best Picture-nominated fictional biblical epic led by Best Actor nominee Richard Burton; a re-airing of Ben-Hur; and The Bible (1966), a religious epic directed by John Huston that recounts the first 22 chapters of the Book of Genesis, with a cast including Michael Parks as Adam, Ulla Bergryd as Eve, Richard Harris as Cain, Franco Nero as Abel, George C. Scott as Abraham, Ava Gardner as Sarah, and Huston as the narrator, Noah and the voice of God.

Starring Joan Blondell
TCM, beginning at 6:15am
Catch a Classic!
Apparently, if Warner Bros. studio boss Jack L. Warner had gotten his way, we would have known actress Rose Joan Blondell as “Inez Holmes.” The young woman, who had just arrived in Hollywood and signed with Warner, refused and became a star anyway (dropping the “Rose” part of her name). Blondell would be a much-remembered luminary of Hollywood’s golden age no matter what name she had used, as you can see during her performances in this morning and afternoon’s lineup of films on TCM, most made during the pre-Code era: Miss Pinkerton (1932), a mystery/comedy costarring George Brent; the gangster film Blondie Johnson (1933); Footlight Parade (1933), a musical with numbers staged and choreographed by Busby Berkeley, which paired Blondell with frequent costar James Cagney; Three on a Match (1932), a crime drama also featuring Warren William, Ann Dvorak and Bette Davis; Lawyer Man (1933), a drama led by William Powell; The King and the Chorus Girl (1937), a romantic comedy directed by Mervyn LeRoy, and costarring Fernand Gravey and Edward Everett Horton; the musical Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), another musical with Berkeley-staged numbers, including one set to the classic song “We’re in the Money”; and the musical comedy Dames (1934), yet another title that features numbers by Berkeley and the introduction of an iconic song, “I Only Have Eyes for You.”

Rebel Without a Cause
TCM, 6:15am
Catch a Classic!
The angst, loneliness, anger and alienation of postwar, middle-class suburban teens is explored in an iconic way in this legendary 1955 drama, one of the first to focus on the “generation gap” between parents and children. Well-crafted in its own right, Rebel surely benefits from what has become the almost-mythic and very charismatic aura of its star, James Dean, an icon of cool who tragically was killed in a car crash about a month before the film was released. As new kid in town Jim, Dean plays what ranks as moviedom’s ultimate teenage rebel, and his Oscar-nominated costars — Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo — are just as compelling to watch under the powerful direction of Nicholas Ray, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story in the second-to-last year for that category.
