TCM Spotlight: The Defining Frontier: The American Character in Westerns
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday and Thursday night look at the history of Westerns via themed lineups continues with “Rugged Individualism.” Since its founding, America has always glorified the individual over the collective. The Constitution helped establish the nation as a place where anyone can thrive through hard work and determination, and the American frontier — with its rugged landscape, lawlessness and lack of infrastructure — rewarded those who could make their own way and overcome difficult conditions. The “lone cowboy” character was often featured in Westerns, symbolizing these ideas of freedom and self-reliance, and helped to ingrain these values into the American consciousness. Examples of that theme can be seen in tonight’s lineup: The Man From Laramie (1955), one of the great James Stewart-led Westerns directed by Anthony Mann; Ride Lonesome (1959), starring Randolph Scott, Karen Steele and James Coburn in his film debut; writer/director Samuel Fuller’s Forty Guns (1957), led by Barbara Stanwyck, Barry Sullivan and Gene Barry; High Plains Drifter (1973), directed by Clint Eastwood, who also stars as another one of those nameless strangers he initially became famous for around this era; Hang ’Em High (1968), also led by Eastwood (this time as a named character) alongside Inger Stevens, Ed Begley and Pat Hingle; and The Oklahoma Kid (1939), starring James Cagney as a heroic gunslinger and Humphrey Bogart as his black-clad villainous nemesis.

Friday Night Frights
MOVIES!, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Cowriter/director George A. Romero’s influential 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead not only popularized zombies in pop culture but also remains one of the more terrifying depictions of these flesh-eating ghouls, as they attack a rural farmhouse where seven people have been trapped following the sudden uprising of the living dead. The film’s social commentary is also as relevant and affecting as its shocks and chills. Some inspiration for the movie appears to have come from Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel I Am Legend, so it’s fitting that MOVIES! follows up Living Dead tonight with The Last Man on Earth (1964), the first film adaptation of I Am Legend, and still one of the most effective. Here, Vincent Price plays a man who becomes a reluctant vampire hunter after a disease apparently turns the rest of humanity into the living dead. Following this, catch David Cronenberg’s Rabid (1977), starring Marilyn Chambers and Frank Moore, and wrap up the night with Romero’s Day of the Dead (1985).

Catch a Classic!

Legendary actor Gene Hackman passed away in February at the age of 95 about a week after the death of his second wife, classical pianist/businesswoman Betsy Arakawa, both at their New Mexico home in a tragic set of health circumstances. For roughly 40 years, from the early 1960s until his retirement in 2004, Hackman was an incredible and authoritative big-screen presence in film roles big and small, playing characters of all types throughout his acclaimed career. Turner Classic Movies remembers the icon with an evening of five titles that demonstrate unequivocally that Hackman was one of the all-time greatest actors. The lineup begins with one of his breakout performances, as Buck Barrow in 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde, which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. After that comes one of Hackman’s most famous roles, which won him the Best Actor Oscar: as NYPD Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in the Best Picture Oscar-winning crime thriller The French Connection (1971). Other classic Hackman characters round out the lineup later in the evening: Coach Norman Dale in the beloved sports drama Hoosiers (1986); FBI agent Rupert Anderson in the powerful Civil Rights Era-set crime thriller Mississippi Burning (1988), which earned Hackman another Best Actor nod; and private investigator Harry Moseby in the fairly bleak 1975 neo-noir thriller Night Moves.

TCM Spotlight: The Defining Frontier: The American Character in Westerns
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday and Thursday night look at the history of Westerns via themed lineups continues with “Social Commentary in Disguise.” Sometimes filmmakers have used Western settings to sneak in social or political messages. Five such examples air tonight, beginning with the Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), which stars Henry Fonda and Dana Andrews, and contains a strong message about the dangers of mob rule. After that, Paul Newman leads the revisionist Western Hombre (1967) as a man who is disdained by his fellow stagecoach passengers because he was raised by Apaches, but who becomes their only hope for survival when outlaws attack. Next is the TCM premiere of the Italian-French coproduction The Great Silence (1968), a lesser-known revisionist “spaghetti Western” whose themes address power, corruption and the excesses of capitalism. The need for gun control — a particularly unexpected theme to find in a Western — features in the next title, director Jacques Tourneur’s Wichita (1955), which stars Joel McCrea as Wyatt Earp. The evening’s final film, director John Ford’s Sergeant Rutledge (1960), was among the first mainstream American films as a whole, not just among Westerns, to treat racism frankly and to give a starring role to a Black actor. Woody Strode plays the title character, a first sergeant among the “Buffalo Soldiers,” a U.S. Cavalry regiment of African American soldiers serving on the American frontier during the late 1800s.

TCM Spotlight: The Defining Frontier: The American Character in Westerns
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday and Thursday night look at the history of Westerns via themed lineups continues with “Heroism and Sacrifice.” Heroism and sacrifice are core American values, and men and women who are willing to take on extreme personal risk to help protect the public are usually celebrated within the culture. Western films often explore these themes by portraying (almost always) men who put their own lives at risk to protect the larger community. These Western heroes are often reluctant, can have mixed motives and sometimes work outside the law, but when a choice needs to be made, they’re always willing to make sacrifices for the greater good, as evidenced by the characters in tonight’s movies. The lineup begins with director John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven (1960), a Western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai that finds seven gunfighters (played by Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and James Coburn) who are hired by Mexican peasants to liberate their village from bandits. After that is the Best Picture Oscar-nominated High Noon (1952), led by Best Actor winner Gary Cooper as a small town’s marshal whose sense of duty is tested when he must decide to stand up to the impending return of a notorious outlaw and his gang of killers alone, or leave town with his new wife (Grace Kelly). Following that is My Darling Clementine (1946), led by Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp during the period leading up to the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The cast also includes Tim Holt, Ward Bond and Don Garner as Wyatt’s brothers Virgil, Morgan and James, and Victor Mature as Doc Holliday. The evening concludes with A Fistful of Dollars (1964), the first of Italian director Sergio Leone’s classic trilogy of spaghetti Westerns, starring Clint Eastwood in his first leading role as the Man With No Name.

Second on the double bill is Dead of Night (1977), originally an NBC movie of the week that features three more stories written by Matheson (one of which is an adaptation of a Jack Finney tale), with a cast led by Ed Begley Jr., Ann Doran and Patrick Macnee.
