An Experiment in Evil: Stephen King’s ‘The Institute’ Begins on MGM+

The Institute, MGM+ Amazon MGM Studios

Exceptionally smart Minneapolis teenager Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman) spends his days slaying math tests, shooting hoops with his buddy and occasionally moving objects around with his mind.

His telekinesis attracts the attention of a shadowy organization known as The Institute, which abducts (“recruits”) Luke and brings him to their remote, secure research facility in Maine.

Under the direction of Ms. Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker), the doctors and staff of The Institute subject Luke and other kids like him to a battery of unpleasant tests designed to enhance and focus their abilities for what’s purported to be a heroic cause.

Meanwhile, Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes), a former Boston cop with emotional scars from a shooting, seeks peace in the small Maine town near The Institute but instead finds strange happenings and a shroud of tragedy hanging over the residents.

Based on Stephen King’s 2019 novel of the same name and including King as an executive producer, eight-part series The Institute is a chilling tale of children encountering and confronting adults’ evil potential.

The Institute premieres with the first two episodes on MGM+ Sunday, July 13, at 9pm ET/PT.
