Lady in the Lake
MOVIES!, 7:20am
Catch a Classic!

Robert Montgomery plays Raymond Chandler’s famous private investigator Philip Marlowe (although the character’s first name is spelled with two l’s here, for some reason) in this 1947 film noir adaptation of Chandler’s 1943 novel, The Lady in the Lake. Montgomery also directed the film, and he brought an interesting creative touch to it: Marlowe is mostly (aside from a couple of reflections) unseen by the audience; the tale is told via his first-person point of view, with the camera seeing what he does. Coupled with the fact that the film has almost no instrumental soundtrack, this production was especially unique for, and certainly ahead of, its time. The technique is mostly pulled off well, although it does take some getting used to. More confusing is the convoluted mystery plot, but that kind of comes with the territory with Chandler. Costarring with Montgomery are Audrey Totter, Lloyd Nolan and Tom Tully.

Hepburn portrays wealthy dowager Violet Venable, who attempts to bribe Dr. John Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift), a young psycho-surgeon from a New Orleans mental hospital that is desperately in need of funds, into lobotomizing her niece, Catherine Holly (Taylor). Violet wants the operation performed in order to prevent Catherine from defiling the memory of her son, the poet Sebastian (Julián Ugarte). Catherine has been babbling obscenely about Sebastian’s mysterious death that she witnessed while on vacation with him in Spain the previous summer. The event has clearly traumatized Catherine emotionally but has not made her as insane as her aunt desperately would like her to be, since Violet herself proves thoroughly unable to process the awful truth of what really happened to Sebastian once Cukrowicz is finally able to get Catherine to fully remember it.

His Girl Friday
TCM, 12pm
Catch a Classic!

One of the fastest, funniest and most quotable films ever, this 1940 Howard Hawks-directed screwball comedy is a quintessential example of that type of film from the genre’s heyday in the 1930s and early ’40s. When adapting Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s hit 1928 play The Front Page into this film, Hawks had the inspired idea of turning its star reporter character Hildy Johnson into a woman. The result is an immortal mix of hard-boiled newsroom setting and remarriage comedy, and Rosalind Russell as Hildy is a standout among cinema’s powerful women. She is matched in force only by her conniving but charismatic editor and ex-husband, Walter Burns (Cary Grant). Burns dangles the chance for Hildy to scoop her fellow reporters with the story of an impending execution in order to keep her from hopping the train that’s supposed to take her to Albany and a new life as a housewife married to bland insurance man Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy).

From 1948-69, he appeared in more than 40 feature films; tonight on Turner Classic Movies, you’ll see five of the movies Murphy made. A Hard Day’s Night
TCM, 11:15am
Catch a Classic!

This 1964 classic starring the Beatles was the Fab Four’s first film and is a fun and influential romp through a fictionalized day in their life during the frenzied height of Beatlemania, and earned Oscar nominations for its screenplay and its adapted musical score by the group’s producer, George Martin. Directed by Richard Lester, the film is a perfect vehicle for John, Paul, George and Ringo, drawing on the cheeky humor and pure fun the group often brought to its songs. The first megastar boy band at the time of filming — and still quite young — the Beatles are comfortably charming in the movie, even while frequently pursued by obsessed fans. The film’s other big star is its fantastic soundtrack, including the title tune and other classics like “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “She Loves You,” “And I Love Her” and “If I Fell.” The innovative way these songs are cut into visual sequences surely had some influence on later music videos. With A Hard Day’s Night and its frantically fun combination of songs and comedy, the Beatles — as they did with their records — set a new and high bar for what a music film could be. And, whether meaning to or not, they and Lester also created an enduringly enjoyable time capsule of one particularly fab moment in time. This film is a centerpiece of today’s lineup on TCM that also features a number of other memorable British film titles from that era. Before A Hard Day’s Night are The Day They Robbed the Bank of England (1960), A Taste of Honey (1961) and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962). After A Hard Day’s Night are All Neat in Black Stockings (1969), Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960), Look Back in Anger (1959) and Tom Jones (1963).
