Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies’ annual August programming favorite returns, with the network again devoting each day this month to films from a particular actor or actress, beginning today with 12 films led by Lana Turner, including celebrated dramas like Green Dolphin Street (1947), Imitation of Life (1959) and The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), and classic films noir like Johnny Eager (1942) and The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946, pictured above), featuring Turner in an iconic femme fatale role alongside John Garfield. This year, eight people are featured in Summer Under the Stars for the first time: Christopher Plummer (Aug. 2), Ruby Dee (Aug. 7), Pedro Armendáriz (Aug. 12), Charles Bronson (Aug. 16), James Gleason (Aug. 18), Gina Lollobrigida (Aug. 23), Tom Courtenay (Aug. 26) and Donald O’Connor (Aug. 28).

This four-episode animated anthology series from Marvel expands upon the action of the Black Panther films and their setting, the nation of Wakanda. The globe-trotting adventure follows the exploits of brave Wakandan warriors known as the Hatut Zaraze as they carry out dangerous missions to retrieve vibranium artifacts from Wakanda’s enemies. Among the heroes and villains featured are Noni (voice of Winnie Harlow), a disgraced former member of the Dora Milaje (Wakanda’s all-female special forces group), and the Lion (Cress Williams), a former Wakandan general turned pirate who has stolen advanced technology from the country and plans to use it to create a “Lion Kingdom” under his own tyrannical rule. Ryan Coogler, who directed Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is among the executive producers.

The acclaimed Academy Award winner is such an obvious choice for inclusion in Summer Under the Stars it’s hard to believe this is his inaugural season! Christopher Plummer will make his premiere with 11 quality titles, including three network premieres: the classic 1965 musical The Sound of Music, the 1976 war film Aces High and 2009’s The Last Station, which garnered Plummer one of his three Oscar noms, for playing Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Among other highlights today are the first two movies in which Plummer appeared as he began his film career after a decade in stage and television dramas: Stage Struck and Wind Across the Everglades, both from 1958, and three Plummer favorites from 1975: The Spiral Staircase, The Return of the Pink Panther and The Man Who Would Be King.

Audrey Kathleen Ruston, eventually better known to movie fans worldwide as Audrey Hepburn, remains one of the most iconic female stars of the silver screen, thanks to her talent, charisma, elegant beauty and trendsetting fashion sense. So it’s no surprise that she returns to Turner Classic Movies’ annual Summer Under the Stars programming event. Throughout today’s lineup of 11 Hepburn films, you’ll see her range in everything from dramas to romantic comedies to musicals and even a thriller that remains one of her most famous movies: 1967’s suspenseful Wait Until Dark, which earned the star her fifth and final Best Actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a blind woman terrorized by criminals who believe a cache of heroin is hidden somewhere in her apartment. You’ll also see Hepburn deliver Best Actress-nominated performances in two famed romantic comedies: as the title character of Best Director nominee Billy Wilder’s romantic comedy/drama Sabrina, alongside Humphrey Bogart and William Holden, and as Holly Golightly, one of Hepburn’s most iconic roles, in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). Beloved actress and singer Frances Ethel Gumm — better known as Judy Garland — is celebrated during today’s Summer Under the Stars marathon on Turner Classic Movies. You’ll see her talent on full display in a 12-film lineup that includes familiar favorites like The Harvey Girls (1946), the Western musical in which Garland performs Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer’s Oscar-winning song “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe”; A Star Is Born (1954), the classic musical drama that earned Garland her first Oscar nomination, for Best Actress, alongside Best Actor nominee James Mason; Summer Stock (1950), a musical also led by Gene Kelly; Life Begins for Andy Hardy (1941), the third and final film of the Mickey Rooney-led comedy franchise to feature Garland as Betsy Booth; and others. The day will also refreshingly feature some other Garland films that may be less known, or at least certainly less aired. These include The Clock (1945), a romantic drama costarring Robert Walker, which was Garland’s first starring role in which she did not sing and was directed by Vincente Minnelli, whom Garland would marry later that year; I Could Go On Singing (1963), a British-American musical drama that marked Garland’s final film performance, and the first movie in which she had sung since A Star Is Born; and more.

African American actress and civil rights activist Ruby Dee began her distinguished acting career on the stage, where she notably originated the role of Ruth Younger in A Raisin in the Sun on Broadway. She reprised that role in the 1961 film adaptation, which is one of the 12 films featuring the actress as she makes her Summer Under the Stars debut today. Among today’s other highlights are three network premieres: Long Day’s Journey Into Night (1982), Uptight (1968) and The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson (1990), a TV movie in which she portrays the mother of the famous titular baseball player. Dee had previously portrayed Robinson’s wife alongside the man himself in the film that concludes today’s lineup, the 1950 biopic The Jackie Robinson Story. Also of note today is the 1972 family drama Black Girl, which was directed by Dee’s husband of nearly 60 years, actor Ossie Davis.

2025 Summer Under the Stars: Elizabeth Taylor

Screen legend Elizabeth Taylor’s big-screen heyday from the mid 1940s through the ’60s is well represented with the mix of 11 titles airing today as part of Turner Classic Movies’ Summer Under the Stars. The lineup starts out with a couple of films Taylor made as a child/teen star: National Velvet (1944), also featuring Mickey Rooney and Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Anne Revere, and A Date With Judy (1948), a musical romantic comedy based on the radio series of the same name, also starring Wallace Beery and Jane Powell. These are followed by some of her earlier “adult” performances, in The Girl Who Had Everything (1953), a romantic drama costarring Fernando Lamas and William Powell in one of his final roles; Father’s Little Dividend (1951), the sequel to the hit 1950 comedy Father of the Bride, with Taylor, Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett reprising their roles; and the historical adventure epic Ivanhoe (1952), also featuring Robert Taylor and Joan Fontaine. The rest of the day features Taylor favorites from the late ’50s through late ’60s when she had become a well-established star. There are the dramas Raintree County (1957) and the Best Picture-nominated Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), which earned Taylor consecutive Best Actress nominations, followed by four of her 11 collaborations with on-again, off-again husband Richard Burton — The Taming of the Shrew (1967), which saw the power couple earning BAFTA Award acting nominations as Kate and Petruchio in Franco Zeffirelli’s take on the Shakespeare classic; the comedy/drama The V.I.P.s (1963); the drama The Sandpiper (1965); and the political drama The Comedians (1967).

Legendary makeup designer Jack Pierce, who had created Boris Karloff’s famous look as the monster in 1931’s Frankenstein, created the werewolf makeup here.
