Wild West MOVIES!
MOVIES!, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!

Enjoy nearly 24 hours of beloved Westerns with this 11-film lineup that begins with Stagecoach (1966), a remake of John Ford’s 1939 classic, directed by Gordon Douglas with an ensemble cast featuring Ann-Margret, Red Buttons, Mike Connors, Bing Crosby, Bob Cummings, Van Heflin, Slim Pickens, Keenan Wynn and Stefanie Powers. Following that are Buck and the Preacher (1972), directed by Sidney Poitier, who stars as Buck alongside Harry Belafonte as Preacher, with Ruby Dee as Buck’s wife, Ruth; The Flame and the Arrow (1950), more of a Western-adjacent swashbuckler directed by Jacques Tourneur, but still with a lot of the fun trappings one would expect from a Western, with Burt Lancaster and Virginia Mayo leading the action, accompanied by a rousing, Oscar-nominated Max Steiner musical score; The Hanging Tree (1959), which was helmed by Delmer Daves, a familiar presence behind the camera when it came to directing Westerns, and features Gary Cooper (a familiar Western face in front of the camera), Maria Schell, Karl Malden and George C. Scott; Lone Star (1952), starring Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, Broderick Crawford, Ed Begley, Lionel Barrymore and 13-year-old George Hamilton in an early screen role (uncredited); Duel in the Sun (1946), a psychological Western from director King Vidor, also led by Barrymore, Best Actress nominee Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Gregory Peck and Best Supporting Actress nominee Lillian Gish; director Don Siegel’s Flaming Star (1960), starring Elvis Presley (who performs the hit title song, but the film is not a musical), Barbara Eden and Steve Forrest; The Desperadoes (1943), Columbia Pictures’ first Technicolor production, led by familiar Western face Randolph Scott, along with Claire Trevor and Glenn Ford; Rawhide (1951), featuring Tyrone Power and Susan Hayward (and unrelated to the later TV series of the same name); the Best Picture-nominated The Ox-Bow Incident (1942), one of those films that is considered not just a great Western, but a great movie overall, directed by William A. Wellman, and starring Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Harry Morgan and Frank Conroy; and The Moonlighter (1953), which re-teams Double Indemnity costars Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, and also features Ward Bond (the film was originally released in 3D, but, sadly, it won’t be in that format here).
