Phylis Lee Isley, better known as actress Jennifer Jones, is celebrated with 11 films during Summer Under the Stars today. Three of the five films for which Jones received Oscar nominations are part of the lineup: The Song of Bernadette (1943), which netted the star her first nomination and only win, as Best Actress in the title role (Bernadette of Lourdes) of this biographical religious-themed drama; Love Letters (1945), featuring Jones in a Best Actress-nominated performance alongside Joseph Cotten; and the Best Picture-nominated romantic drama Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955), which sees Best Actress nominee Jones paired with William Holden. Other highlights, of particular note for literature buffs, are Jones as poet Elizabeth Barrett in The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1957); as Emma Bovary in the 1949 adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s novel Madame Bovary (1949); in the title role of Carrie (1952), director William Wyler’s adaptation of Theodore Dreiser’s novel Sister Carrie, also featuring Laurence Olivier; and alongside Rock Hudson in the war drama A Farewell to Arms (1957), based on Ernest Hemingway’s novel.

While not necessarily a name that immediately rolls off the tongue when it comes to movie stars from the golden age of Hollywood, actor/playwright/screenwriter James Gleason is certainly a familiar face to fans of titles from that era. He often turned up in supporting roles as a tough-talking but warmhearted character, and you’ll have plenty of chances to see him in action today as he makes his Summer Under the Stars debut with a 16-film lineup. Among the highlights are a few of Gleason’s more memorable roles: as boxing manager Max Corkle in the fantasy/comedy Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination; as police Lt. Rooney in the screwball dark comedy Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), directed by Frank Capra and led by Cary Grant; and as Uncle Birdie in The Night of the Hunter (1955), the thriller directed by Charles Laughton and starring Robert Mitchum.

Highlights include Algiers (1938), the romantic drama that marked her Hollywood debut and made her a star alongside Best Actor Oscar nominee Charles Boyer; Boom Town (1940), a Western also featuring Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy and Claudette Colbert; Comrade X (1940), a comedic spy film re-teaming Gable and Lamarr; I Take This Woman (1940); The Heavenly Body (1944), a romantic comedy also led by William Powell; The Conspirators (1944), a film noir/wartime spy thriller costarring Paul Henreid, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre; The Strange Woman (1946), a historical melodrama also featuring George Sanders; Samson and Delilah (1949), director Cecil B. Beloved actor and dancer James Cagney is celebrated today in Turner Classic Movies’ Summer Under the Stars. Director Orson Welles described Cagney as “maybe the greatest actor who ever appeared in front of a camera,” and you’ll see what Welles was talking about with this day of 14 films starring Cagney that span a variety of genres. Some of the movies, of course, are in the crime/gangster genre with which the actor still remains most identified, including The Doorway to Hell (1930), Cagney’s second film, Lady Killer (1933), He Was Her Man (1934) and G Men (1935). But you’ll also see the star in his Best Actor Oscar-nominated role in the Doris Day-led romantic musical biography Love Me or Leave Me (1955); uttering his famous (and oft-imitated) phrase “That dirty, double-crossin’ rat!” in the pre-Code romantic comedy/drama Blonde Crazy (1931); playing alongside Bette Davis in the screwball comedy The Bride Came C.O.D. (1941); and leading director Robert Wise’s Western Tribute to a Bad Man (1956), among other titles. The day will conclude with the 1992 documentary James Cagney: Top of the World.

You can see his acting (and, on occasion, some of that singing!) in action today with his 11-film celebration on Summer Under the Stars. Up first, Ol’ Blue Eyes appears as a dramatized version of himself in the musical Higher and Higher (1943), one of his earliest screen roles. Some of Sinatra’s other 1940s favorites also air today: the musical comedy Anchors Aweigh (1945), also featuring Gene Kelly and Kathryn Grayson; the Western comedy The Kissing Bandit (1948), which re-teams Sinatra and Grayson; and Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949), also with Kelly and Esther Williams. The lineup includes two TCM premieres: the romantic comedy Strange Bedfellows (1965), also starring Rock Hudson, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1956), a French-Italian production in which she plays Esmeralda alongside Anthony Quinn’s Quasimodo.
