Catch a Classic!
The final night of Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Monday night Peter Sellers celebration features five titles, beginning with two more of his comedic collaborations with director Blake Edwards: The Party (1968) and The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), which earned the actor another Golden Globe nomination as Inspector Clouseau in a comedic mystery costarring Christopher Plummer, Catherine Schell and Herbert Lom. Those are followed by the last of Sellers’ movies released before his untimely passing, and a fantastic swan song for the beloved star: the 1979 satirical comedy/drama Being There (pictured above), which netted him a Best Actor Oscar nomination alongside Best Supporting Actor winner Melvyn Douglas. The lineup concludes in late night/early morning with two earlier romantic comedies: There’s a Girl in My Soup (1970), costarring BAFTA Award nominee Goldie Hawn, and I Love You, Alice B. Disguised under a wig, prosthetics, and southern charm, he reinvents himself as walk-on oddball Chad Powers. The series is inspired by Eli Manning’s viral ESPN sketch, where the NFL legend (and series producer) went undercover at Penn State tryouts.

70th Anniversary of James Dean’s Death
TCM, beginning at 8pm

He was the epitome of cool and the symbol of youth rebellion in the 1950s. In memory of the iconic and unique acting style of James Dean, who died on Sept. 30, 1955 — at the young age of 24 — TCM has dedicated an entire evening to his work, beginning with the fascinating half-hour Campbell Summer Soundstage: Life Sentence episode (1953), where a young Dean plays Hank Bradon, an imprisoned felon who escapes and finds that being on the run is just a new form of imprisonment. The evening continues with his limited but popular film resumé of East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956), concluding with a documentary that looks at one of the greatest Hollywood filmmakers of the 20th century in George Stevens: A Filmmaker’s Journey (1984).

Jimmy Fallon hosts this new reality competition show that follows a group of marketing creatives from various backgrounds who will work on a campaign for a major brand, writing jingles and producing commercials for different companies during every episode. At the end of the season, one will be named the best in the business and will receive a cash prize. Bozoma Saint John, the former chief marketing officer for Netflix (and current cast member of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), is both a judge on the show as well as a mentor to the creatives.

The Twisted Tale is based on co-producer Knox’s own account of authorities’ flawed interrogation, her coerced confession, and her stunning conviction, followed by her nearly four-year incarceration and fight to prove her innocence.

Legendary singer/actress Julie Andrews turns 90 today. Born in 1935 in England, Andrews rose to stardom at a young age, first singing for Queen Elizabeth at just 13 years old. The queen would later honor her with a damehood. Andrews’ most unforgettable roles were in The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. She’s voiced plenty of popular characters over the years as well, from the queen in Shrek 2 to narrating Netflix’s drama Bridgerton as Lady Whistledown. Turner Classic Movies celebrates this icon’s birthday with four of her films. First up is the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music (1965), which earned five Academy Awards and paired Andrews with Christopher Plummer. Next is the romantic comedy Victor/Victoria (1982) costarring James Garner and Robert Preston. Following is Torn Curtain (1966), a spy thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock and costarring Paul Newman. Finally comes Hawaii (1966), an epic drama based on a James A. Michener novel and costarring Max von Sydow, Richard Harris and Gene Hackman.

Dame Angela Lansbury is celebrated with lineups of her memorable films the first four Thursday nights this October on Turner Classic Movies (the fifth Thursday, Oct. 30, the network will be airing its annual scary movie marathon). The lineup on Oct. 16 will be particularly notable, as it takes place on what would have been the star’s 100th birthday (she was born Oct. 16, 1925, in London; she died in Los Angeles on Oct. 11, 2022, at the age of 96). Tonight, however, features five of Lansbury’s earlier films, with highlights including her second feature, National Velvet (1944), led by Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney; her fourth film, The Harvey Girls (1946), the Judy Garland-led Western musical, and The Three Musketeers (1948), in which she plays Queen Anne alongside Gene Kelly, Van Heflin, Gig Young and Robert Coote as the Musketeers.

Based on James M. Cain’s controversial novel, this 1946 film pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable under the Hays Code, with its sexual and violent undertones. John Garfield plays drifter Frank Chambers, who stops at a rural California diner and begins a passionate affair with Cora (Lana Turner), the beautiful wife of the older owner (played by Cecil Kellaway). Consumed by lust and desperation, Frank and Cora conspire to murder Cora’s husband and make it look like an accident, but their plan begins to unravel amid suspicion, and their own guilt and betrayal.

The monthlong event kicks off tonight and promises back-to-back chills and laughs every Saturday night, with both Svengoolie and House of Svengoolie double features. Tonight’s films are The Ghost and Mr. Chicken starring Don Knotts, followed by the classic Bette Davis and Joan Crawford thriller What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Rich Koz, who has portrayed Svengoolie for 46 years, is once again joined by his Sven Squad, which includes Sarah Palmer as Gwengoolie, Scott Gryder as IMP and Bill Leff as Nostalgiaferatoo. Tonight, TCM host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, who introduces two films of his choosing. Miranda will offer commentary on each film’s significance and its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories, and his own personal reflections on them. The films chosen are focused on music and dancing: The Band Wagon (1953), a musical starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse, and All That Jazz (1979), Bob Fosse’s semiautobiographical film starring Roy Scheider and Jessica Lange.
