The Twisted Tale is based on co-producer Knox’s own account of authorities’ flawed interrogation, her coerced confession, and her stunning conviction, followed by her nearly four-year incarceration and fight to prove her innocence.

Legendary singer/actress Julie Andrews turns 90 today. Born in 1935 in England, Andrews rose to stardom at a young age, first singing for Queen Elizabeth at just 13 years old. The queen would later honor her with a damehood. Andrews’ most unforgettable roles were in The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. She’s voiced plenty of popular characters over the years as well, from the queen in Shrek 2 to narrating Netflix’s drama Bridgerton as Lady Whistledown. Turner Classic Movies celebrates this icon’s birthday with four of her films. First up is the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music (1965), which earned five Academy Awards and paired Andrews with Christopher Plummer. Next is the romantic comedy Victor/Victoria (1982) costarring James Garner and Robert Preston. Following is Torn Curtain (1966), a spy thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock and costarring Paul Newman. Finally comes Hawaii (1966), an epic drama based on a James A. Michener novel and costarring Max von Sydow, Richard Harris and Gene Hackman.

Dame Angela Lansbury is celebrated with lineups of her memorable films the first four Thursday nights this October on Turner Classic Movies (the fifth Thursday, Oct. 30, the network will be airing its annual scary movie marathon). The lineup on Oct. 16 will be particularly notable, as it takes place on what would have been the star’s 100th birthday (she was born Oct. 16, 1925, in London; she died in Los Angeles on Oct. 11, 2022, at the age of 96). Tonight, however, features five of Lansbury’s earlier films, with highlights including her second feature, National Velvet (1944), led by Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney; her fourth film, The Harvey Girls (1946), the Judy Garland-led Western musical, and The Three Musketeers (1948), in which she plays Queen Anne alongside Gene Kelly, Van Heflin, Gig Young and Robert Coote as the Musketeers.

Based on James M. Cain’s controversial novel, this 1946 film pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable under the Hays Code, with its sexual and violent undertones. John Garfield plays drifter Frank Chambers, who stops at a rural California diner and begins a passionate affair with Cora (Lana Turner), the beautiful wife of the older owner (played by Cecil Kellaway). Consumed by lust and desperation, Frank and Cora conspire to murder Cora’s husband and make it look like an accident, but their plan begins to unravel amid suspicion, and their own guilt and betrayal.

Tonight’s films are The Ghost and Mr. Chicken starring Don Knotts, followed by the classic Bette Davis and Joan Crawford thriller What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
