This new mockumentary-style comedy from sibling writers Jeff and Liz Astrof is set in the unexpectedly cutthroat world of junior college cheer teams. Courteney Potter (Jenn Lyon) is a successful JUCO cheer coach at Sammy Davis Sr. Junior College who has a fall from grace when a video of her partying with her team surfaces and she’s forced to take a coaching job at a much less prestigious school. The team includes a senior in his 30s (Ryan Pinkston), a “cheerlebrity” (Anissa Borrego), an energetic narcoleptic (Arianna Davis) and a kleptomaniac (Taylor Dunbar). Kristin Chenoweth has a recurring role as Tammy, the assistant coach who takes over when Courteney is fired. Tammy still acts and dresses like she’s stuck in her cheer heyday in 1989. Taran Killam plays Boone E. Potter, Courteney’s husband and coach of the Sammy Davis Sr. Junior football team. First up is 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, which featured Judy Garland’s dazzling turn as a farm girl who lands in technicolor Oz and that evil Wicked Witch of the West’s (Margaret Hamilton) quest for those ruby slippers. The TCM debut of 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark follows, as Harrison Ford embodies Indiana Jones in this Steven Spielberg-directed masterpiece to obtain a religious relic before a group of Nazis do. Next up? 1984’s romantic comedy adventure Romancing the Stone, which found Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito starring, as their characters pursued a priceless gem hidden in the jungle. 1963’s fantasy adventure Jason and the Argonauts, with Todd Armstrong and Honor Blackman, and 1941’s noir classic The Maltese Falcon, with Humphrey Bogart as a smooth detective, finish out the night.

Capturing one of America’s greatest modern-day prima ballerinas, this documentary explores Tiler Peck’s battle against challenging injuries, fighting her way back as an elite dancer and choreographer with the New York City Ballet. With intimate access, Peck looks back at her past successes and faces her fears for the future, along with her desire to overcome the greatest physical and emotional crisis of her life: a spinal cord injury following a contentious public divorce from another NYCB principal dancer. With her return to the stage, she takes on the creative challenge of her career: a prestigious invitation to choreograph for the New York City Ballet, culminating in performances of her debut work as choreographer set to Poulenc’s “Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra.” Meeting with mentors, iconic choreographers, and other dance contemporaries, Peck pushes to create a ballet for the company that will make a lasting mark on the dance world.

In tonight’s Two for One re-airing, TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by Emmy-, Tony- and Oscar-nominated actor Brian Tyree Henry, who introduces two films of his choosing. Henry will offer commentary on each title’s cultural significance and its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories and his own personal reflections. First up is 1959’s Oscar-nominated Imitation of Life, which sees Lana Turner as a single mother who dreams of the Broadway stage and, after a chance encounter, ends up taking in an African American widow (Juanita Moore, in a Golden Globe- and Academy Award-nominated turn) with a light-skinned daughter. Together, they struggle to raise their children amid a world of prejudice in a film that has remained significant throughout the years. 1969’s The Learning Tree is Henry’s second selection. The film tells a sentimental coming-of-age story about Newt Winger (Kyle Johnson), an African American Kansas boy from a poor family whose journey to adulthood is marked with tragedy and hard lessons about love, trust and racial hardships.

The one problem? The very different siblings, who are each going through their own personal life challenges, have naturally gone in separate directions over the years and the idea of spending 10 days cooped up on a river cruise together makes each Keller child cringe for their own reasons. The film is inspired by star and executive producer Bennett’s own family excursions.

Actress Zita Johann, who was born in Austria-Hungary and started her career on the Broadway stage, gets the spotlight tonight. In 1933’s The Sin of Nora Morgan, she plays a woman recounting her life as she waits for her fate on death row — destined to die for a murder she didn’t commit. The film is followed by 1932’s The Mummy, where horror icon Boris Karloff plays a resurrected Egyptian prince searching for his lost princess, who he believes to be reincarnated as a girl named Helen (Johann, in her most well-known role). In 1932’s Tiger Shark, a Portuguese immigrant fisherman (Edward G. Robinson) meets and subsequently falls in love with Quita Silva (Johann), the only surviving family member of a man killed by a shark attack.

The brilliant, baritone-voiced Welsh star was nominated for seven Oscars — without winning any — and this five-film marathon honoring what would have been his centennial (he passed away in 1984) begins with two of those acclaimed performances. In the exceptional and vitriolic 1966 drama Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Burton and his then-wife Elizabeth Taylor famously played George and Martha, a bickering college professor and his wife. The film is followed by the 1953 sword-and-sandal classic The Robe with Burton as the Roman tribune responsible for the execution of Jesus, with the Messiah’s robe central to the uplifting tale. This is followed by Burton’s star turns in the 1959 British “angry young man” drama Look Back in Anger and John Huston’s The Night of the Iguana (1964). The evening wraps up with Villain (1971), costarring Ian McShane and Nigel Davenport.

Nearly 100 years ago, motion pictures were irrevocably — and loudly — changed by the long-developed move away from silent pictures to ones that married sound with pictures. That technological marvel is at the center of the 2021 documentary Cinema Finds Its Voice, which begins the evening. Then, humorously, the Hollywood plotline of a silent-era star’s voice being quite unsuitable for the talkies era gets its play in the 1952 musical comedy classic Singin’ in the Rain starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. You also get something of a real-life version of that with 1929’s light comedy His Glorious Night, with silent megastar John Gilbert reportedly criticized for poor speaking. (In reality, poor Gilbert was dealing with a subpar script!) Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail (1929); a documentary about the director’s evolving techniques during that period, Becoming Hitchcock: The Legacy of Blackmail (2024); and King Vidor’s Hallelujah (1929) round out the night.

“He’s one of my biggest inspirations,” Steve Buscemi says of Al Pacino, who fronts both halves of Buscemi’s chosen double feature in tonight’s Two for One re-airing. Buscemi — acclaimed star of The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and, famously, the film version of Fargo — starts with 1973’s Scarecrow, featuring Pacino and Gene Hackman in a road dramedy playing unlikely would-be partners in a Pittsburgh car wash business … if they can even get there from California. That’s followed by 1975’s Dog Day Afternoon, with Pacino and beloved, ill-fated costar John Cazale playing bumbling bank robbers in the truth-based crime drama. “Studios were making such interesting films [in the 1970s],” an admiring Buscemi says.
