Nearly 100 years ago, motion pictures were irrevocably — and loudly — changed by the long-developed move away from silent pictures to ones that married sound with pictures. That technological marvel is at the center of the 2021 documentary Cinema Finds Its Voice, which begins the evening. Then, humorously, the Hollywood plotline of a silent-era star’s voice being quite unsuitable for the talkies era gets its play in the 1952 musical comedy classic Singin’ in the Rain starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. You also get something of a real-life version of that with 1929’s light comedy His Glorious Night, with silent megastar John Gilbert reportedly criticized for poor speaking. (In reality, poor Gilbert was dealing with a subpar script!) Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail (1929); a documentary about the director’s evolving techniques during that period, Becoming Hitchcock: The Legacy of Blackmail (2024); and King Vidor’s Hallelujah (1929) round out the night.

Set in 2007, at the dawn of user-generated content, SKIT follows three female college students determined to make a viral YouTube video — resulting in a kooky, relatable coming-of-age farce. The cast features a dynamic mix of comedians, actors and influencers, including Jamie Linn Watson (What We Do in the Shadows), Jamie Shapiro (National Lampoon Radio Hour) and stand-up comic Nataly Aukar. Additional rising comedy voices Lukas Arnold (Wild ‘N Out), writer Jacob Kaplan and writer-performer Alise Morales round out the ensemble. Cameos include Mary Birdsong (Reno 911!) and Jim O’Heir (Parks and Recreation). “He’s one of my biggest inspirations,” Steve Buscemi says of Al Pacino, who fronts both halves of Buscemi’s chosen double feature in tonight’s Two for One re-airing. Buscemi — acclaimed star of The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and, famously, the film version of Fargo — starts with 1973’s Scarecrow, featuring Pacino and Gene Hackman in a road dramedy playing unlikely would-be partners in a Pittsburgh car wash business … if they can even get there from California. That’s followed by 1975’s Dog Day Afternoon, with Pacino and beloved, ill-fated costar John Cazale playing bumbling bank robbers in the truth-based crime drama. “Studios were making such interesting films [in the 1970s],” an admiring Buscemi says.

At the same time, Tommy has to navigate his newfound partnership with dangerous cartel boss Gallino (Andy Garcia). Viewers will meet Tommy’s “Pop,” also known as T.L., played by 1883’s Sam Elliott, who joins as a series regular.

Hosted, narrated and executive produced by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese, this docudrama continues to illuminate the extraordinary lives of men and women who risked everything to embody humanity’s most noble and complex trait — faith. Season 2 begins with a look at St. Patrick, who was born in Roman Britannia in the late fourth century AD. As a young man, he was kidnapped by pirates and enslaved in what was then called Hibernia (present-day Ireland). It was there, as a shepherd, that Patrick discovered his true Christian faith, began praying day and night, and tending to hungry forest dwellers. After six years as a slave, Patrick heard a voice calling him home. A ship appeared, and Patrick returned to Britannia. He became a priest, but he then had a vision of the forest people begging him to “come walk among them again.” He did return, baptized thousands, founded churches and became the patron saint of Ireland. Part 1 of the season consists of four episodes, with a new episode released each Sunday through Dec. 7. Upcoming episodes look at St. Peter, St. Thomas Becket and St. Carlo Acutis.

Prolific documentarian Ken Burns has been a frequent fixture in PBS’ fall lineups, and he’s back again this year with this six-part, 12-hour film that he codirected with Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, which examines how America’s founding struggle and eight-year war for independence from Britain turned the world upside down. “The American Revolution is one of the most important events in human history,” Burns says. “As we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our founding, I’m hopeful that people throughout the country will come together to discuss the importance of this history and to appreciate even more what our ancestors did to secure our liberty and freedoms.”

Let’s get this straight: Jeff Bridges will always be “The Dude.” He created a cultural phenomenon starring as him in 1998’s The Big Lebowski, which begins the night. “That dude thing — Lebowski — that wasn’t a hit when it came out,” Bridges tells us. “Nobody knew quite what to make of it and it just kind of grew and grew. And now I’ve written books about it. There’s religion there, festivals, it’s a whole culture.” While Bridges’ recent badass turn in FX’s The Old Man has garnered him a new legion of fans, his 1989 turn as Jack Baker opposite his brother Beau Bridges in The Fabulous Baker Boys, which airs next, is pure smoky magic. He actually played much of the piano himself in the film, adding a whole extra layer of cool to that brooding, jazz-soaked vibe.

Turner Classic Movies continues its monthlong celebration of the star with several more of his films, starting with 1954’s Magnificent Obsession, which turned him into a genuine movie star. Hudson plays a reckless, hard-drinking playboy who alienates everyone around him. After inadvertently causing a woman (Jane Wyman) to go blind, he dedicates the rest of his life to medicine and becoming a brain surgeon. Will he later need those skills to save her, who he has secretly fallen in love with? This sophisticated soap opera was one of the eight films Hudson made with director Douglas Sirk. The second film in tonight’s lineup, the melodrama All That Heaven Allows, costars Wyman in another successful collaboration.
