31 Days of Oscar: Oscar Goes to New York
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!
Enjoy an entire day taking in some of the best movies ever made that were set in America’s real capital, New York City, spanning the 1920s through the ’80s. The earliest is comedian Harold Lloyd’s final silent film, Speedy (1928). Besides offering a fascinating on-location portrait of a New York that no longer exists, Speedy features Lloyd in a hilarious trolley car ride, complete with a real-life accident that occurred during filming and was kept in the movie. The city in the ’60s is represented in the Neil Simon-written Barefoot in the Park (1967), with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Another Simon-written romantic comedy, 1977’s The Goodbye Girl, features his then-wife, Marsha Mason. Writers showing off their significant others remains the theme in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), which offers a memorable portrait of actor Mia Farrow and the pair’s relationship at the time (filmed in her real-life New York apartment), supported by a strong ensemble cast including the always stellar Dianne Wiest. Plus, you won’t want to miss the superb primetime opener Moonstruck (1987), featuring Oscar winner Cher as an Italian American Brooklynite who falls in love with her fiancé’s brother. Besides the unfolding of the main storyline, this very quotable movie’s heart is its overall emphasis on la famiglia. Finally, New York’s seamier side is shown in a pair of late-night films focusing on prostitution, both female and male, with the at-first-unlikely-but-true-friends-till-the-end tale Midnight Cowboy (1969), with Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman; and Klute (1971), with Fonda as a call girl and Donald Sutherland as the detective needing her help with an investigation.

31 Days of Oscar: Oscar Goes Silent
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Can you name one of the films honored at the first Academy Awards? After tonight, you’ll be able to name five, as TCM presents several films honored at the academy’s initial May 1929 ceremony. All are superlative examples of what silent films had evolved into by the late 1920s and include 1927’s Wings, showcasing the great technical and daring camera prowess achieved in re-creating and filming World War I aerial battle scenes, without a reliance on models. On the opposite of the technical spectrum, director F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise (1927) showcases the heights to which models and perfected camera dissolves could be used to tell a compelling story of an extended vacation affair. Those same techniques were used by director King Vidor in The Crowd (1928), featuring a memorable opening sequence that scales an office skyscraper, peeks into one of its windows, and reveals rows and rows of office workers, making the just-as-dehumanizing white-collar connection to blue-collar widget making. The other honored silent films shown from 1928 are Charlie Chaplin’s The Circus and the gangster-genre precursor The Racket. Also well worth watching, but separated in time from these other films, is the modern silent classic The Artist (2011). The story, dealt with in other films like Singin’ in the Rain and the recent Babylon, is another retelling of the seismic shift created in the movie industry with the introduction of sound in pictures. By using the A Star Is Born arc, the film illustrates the struggles, and eventual resolution, of a male superstar of the silent era facing his now-obvious career decline, paired with a new female star on the rise in the sound era. Watch for a staircase scene that fleshes out this exact dichotomy.

The career of Robert Duvall — one of Hollywood’s most respected and versatile character actors, who passed away Feb. 15 — is commemorated tonight on TCM with three of his most acclaimed films. Dubbed the “actor’s actor,” Duvall proved just as adept in leading roles, as was the case in 1983’s Tender Mercies, in which he portrayed a washed-up, hard-drinking former country singer fighting to rebuild his life. Duvall’s performance as Mac Sledge earned him the Oscar for Best Actor. Up next is 1979’s The Great Santini, where Duvall’s portrayal of Lt. Col. Bull Meechum, a domineering Marine who rules his family with the same iron fist he applies to his men, earned him the first of his three Best Actor nominations. The tribute concludes with 1979’s Apocalypse Now, with Duvall as Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore (“I love the smell of napalm in the morning”) — whose leadership of an air cavalry unit in Vietnam is representative of the absurdity and madness of war — in another Academy Award-nominated performance.

For anyone who has ever faced serious medical odds, it’s always comforting to know there are good doctors willing to help. Tonight, you’ll be able settle in with some of the best films about doctors and their patients. Two women deal with cancer diagnoses in No Sad Songs for Me (1950) and 1939’s Dark Victory, with Bette Davis; and the surgical profession is highlighted in Stanley Kramer’s Not as a Stranger (1955). The highlight of the evening’s programming, however, is a pair of films starring Jane Wyman, in separate roles as a deaf and a blind woman. In Johnny Belinda (1948), airing in late-night, Wyman plays a young deaf woman with a difficult life that’s about to become even more difficult. The one bright spot is a kind doctor who teaches her American Sign Language, affording her an empowerment she didn’t know she had. 31 Days of Oscar: Oscar Goes South

There’s something about the American South that inspires the best stories and the actors drawn to flesh out the tales set there. Tonight, take in 2014’s Selma, a retelling of the 1965 voting rights marches in Alabama, going from Selma to Montgomery. The great city of New Orleans is the setting for movies about women who are as different as could be, from Bette Davis in William Wyler’s pre-Civil War drama Jezebel (1938), where she plays a strong, independent society belle; to Vivien Leigh as another Southern belle, though this one fragile and mentally unstable, in the screen adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Rounding out the night’s programming is a Robert Duvall double feature of sorts, starting with The Great Santini (1979), in which he plays a military pilot who’s abusive to his family. The film is based on the book by Pat Conroy (author of The Prince of Tides) and chronicles his family’s time in South Carolina. Duvall also makes his feature film debut as reclusive neighbor Boo Radley in the masterful To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Told from the perspectives of 6-year-old Scout and her brother Jem, the movie relates the beauty and power of family love, the opening of a wide world beyond carefree childhood, and the epiphany of seeing other people as their true selves.

31 Days of Oscar: Oscar Goes to Bat
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
TCM knocks it out of the park tonight with a quintet of movies about the game of baseball and its players. The evening begins with two modern classics of the genre, both starring Kevin Costner. In 1989’s Field of Dreams, Costner stars as a farmer who hears a voice in his cornfield urging him to construct a baseball diamond where ghosts of the sport’s legends can play games again. If you haven’t seen this film before, you are in for a surprising treat, as it’s not as “corny” as it sounds. Later, in Bull Durham (1988), Costner plays an aging minor-leaguer who mentors hotshot pitcher Ebby (Tim Robbins). The film is told mostly from the perspective of baseball groupie Annie (Susan Sarandon), who also becomes the pitcher’s lover. Next, baseball greats dealing with difficult medical challenges are worthily represented in the Sam Wood-directed movies The Stratton Story (1949), where James Stewart plays former Chicago White Sox pitcher Monty Stratton, an amputee making a career comeback; and 1942’s The Pride of the Yankees, with Gary Cooper as the New York Yankees’ Lou Gehrig, who’s diagnosed with the neurological disease ALS. Also shown is 1973’s Bang the Drum Slowly, starring a then-little-known Robert De Niro as a fictional player grappling with Hodgkin lymphoma (a cancer).
Stumble: “Daytona”

31 Days of Oscar: Oscar Goes for the Laugh
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!
Fortunately, the academy isn’t all seriousness and, all day today, TCM lets you enjoy some good belly laughs and witty chuckles in some of the best comedies ever made, representing many different types of humor. There are black-and-white romantic comedies like It Happened One Night (1934), with Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable; 1940’s The Philadelphia Story, with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant as sparring exes; and My Man Godfrey (1936), with real-life exes Carole Lombard and William Powell. Comedy teams of the ’60s are showcased in 1961’s Lover Come Back, with Doris Day and Rock Hudson; The Fortune Cookie (1966), featuring the first pairing of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau; and 1967’s The Producers, starring Gene Wilder in one of his many collaborations with writer/director Mel Brooks. Also enjoy work from some of film’s greatest comedians in the Marx Brothers’ A Day at the Races (1937); Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator (1940); and Jacques Tati’s Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday (1953). Finally, take in some fun nostalgia with more modern comedies such as 1977’s Annie Hall, with Diane Keaton and Woody Allen; 10 (1979), with Dudley Moore and Bo Derek; and 1982’s Tootsie, with Dustin Hoffman playing a female soap opera star. Laugh along with a lineup that’s all in good fun today.
